Today we’d like to introduce you to Margarita Bravo.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Margarita. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am an interior designer and decorator, remodeler, furniture designer, furniture curator, and creator of experiences based in Denver, Colorado. I started my business back in 2015 with the idea to bring a technical, creative yet down to earth approach to my interaction with clients. Since inception I have been expanding, taking on larger projects and branching out into furniture design and even creating my own market place platform to enhancement productivity and collaboration among interior designers.
As a way of background, my unique skill set has evolved from my strong educational background and European and Latin American sources of inspiration. I have a Bachelors Degree in Industrial Engineering and I also have Interior Design studies in New York and Barcelona.
I have a strong orientation for customer service. After all, it is all about the client and the home they love. My client-centric approach has resulted in strong accolades and a growing client base. I typically work for a client that is looking for an interior designer and decorator who not only can be involved in the early stages of the home design- working side by side with architects- but also can execute the project and decorate the finished home reflecting the client’s taste and my signature design.
My approach to interior designing and project execution – engineering and project management background – is at the intersection of my clients’ ambitions and my own creativity. This unique combination results in the ultimate client experience coupled with everlasting finishes that reflect my client’s personality influenced by my own personal touch. I believe this value proposition has allowed me to grow both personally and professionally.
Above all, I am a Mother of two beautiful boys. I am also a wife, runner, yogi, skier, traveler, investor, and a visionary, I have always had big dreams. Coming from a middle class hard working family from a small town in Venezuela, South America, life has taken me places. I finished last summer my last Interior Design Program at the European Institute of Design in Barcelona, Spain.
When all stars align, you can find me traveling somewhere in Europe and spending the summer in her house in Barcelona, Spain with my husband Danny, my two boys Noah & Iker, and my two dogs Bolt & Rocco.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it has not been a smooth road. Entrepreneurship is a buzz word. It sounds really good, nice. But it really isn’t. Starting your own business – with or without kids, male or female, funded or not, is hard. Probably harder than you think it would be.
So for anyone out there that is looking to get into doing their own thing, I can tell is that be ready to work long hours. Be ready to be away from home more than you thought you would be. Be ready to be rejected, denied, laughed at, ignored and more. Be also ready to deal with frustrations, anxiety, and unnecessary amounts of stress. It is a daily roller coaster. Dealing with clients, vendors, timelines, cash flows, invoicing, and everything else in between.
To me, the biggest struggle at the beginning was to deal with the things I mentioned above. There is only so much rejection a human being can take. Yet, if this is your passion then you know that sooner or later you will find your niche, your place and you will start making progress.
MARGARITA BRAVO as a company is not even close to being a finished product. I am working hard and doing what I am doing out of pure passion. My day goes by without me noticing the hours. I love doing what I do and that is the reason why I deal with the rest as I came to realize that it is also part of being on your own.
While everything has its days and while it has been an intense learning experience – assembly a crew a talented and competent trade, vendors that you trust and providers of good quality products – it has also been extremely rewarding.
To see a client happy at their newly finished home is beyond description. To know that I can make a difference in people’s lives it is simply amazing. To provide for my family, to set an example for my kids, to employ and give a professional opportunity to someone makes me come back to work every day, especially knowing that all of it is the result of my infinite passion for interior design.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
MARGARITA BRAVO is a full-cycle interior design studio. We design. We build. And we decor. New builds or full renovations. Our centralized style can minimize stress, avoid miscommunication, save time and optimize costs.
We are known for taking projects from an early design stage and turning them into luxurious yet cozy spaces that warm hearts and create lasting experiences. Starting with the end-goal in mind allows for a more cohesive transition amount the different phases of a project and I believe we excel in that regard. Barcelona is home for me and my family also. We have a strong connection with Spain, France and Europe in general. I travel as much as I can to take in the sources of inspiration I need to develop my projects.
I believe in addressing the client’s needs as much as I can. I look for ways where there is a strong impact on value creation where I can make that WOW effect in our client’s homes. As such, we have expanded into high-end furniture design. Designed by me and my sister, my own furniture collection is handcrafted in Portugal, France and Spain. We are in the final phases of our first pieces. I have traveled to Europe and back more than I initially anticipated but I believe these very exclusive and unique pieces will add an amazing touch to our different projects.
As mentioned, I am an entrepreneur. A very active one. I look for ways where I can become more efficient while assisting others. I filed my patent around an online platform where interior designers can exchange their very own accessories and styling artifacts for their own projects so they can have their place ready for their professional photoshoot. Rent, receive the items, photoshoot them, and return much like Rent-the-Runway. I utilize the other interior designer’s inventory and they utilize mine. Not different than Uber or Airbnb when they utilize someone else’s assets enabling the transaction through an app. Same here. It is early but it is my own idea and I am very excited about it.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
The most important definition of success is my own. And my definition has to do with less of materialistic stuff and more with happiness and feelings of accomplishment.
On a personal level, success is about going home knowing that you had a positive impact on someone’s life. Knowing that I helped someone somehow. Success is the ability to create ever-lasting memories with family and friends no matter the place, no matter how. Success is the little things, the moments, the memories, the laughs, and the times where I feel blessed to be surrounded by people who love me and people who I love. The more I laugh and see my family happy, the more I know how successful I am.
From a business perspective, I measure success in terms of client satisfaction, number of recurring clients, referrals, and yes, number of projects, income and cash flow.
