Meet Mia Seymour of Mecha in Boulder

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mia Seymour.

Mia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always been a very physically active person- since I was a kid- I was a high-energy mover. Until recently being active was what I did for myself. After I had my daughter, I began rethinking my career and what I wanted to do with my life. I had been working with a personal trainer and finding myself challenging my strength in new ways and getting into the best shape of my life (and I was always strong and in good shape so my bar was already set pretty high). I started looking for new ways to put my training into action and was introduced to Spartan Races. My first Spartan race I did not finish in the top 10- that was not until my 3rd race. It was the most invigorating experience! Within that same time period, a friend asked if I ever thought of becoming a personal trainer myself. I had not, until that moment. It all felt completely aligned and completely scary.

Not long after that conversation, I left my 12-year career in K-12 education (as a classroom teacher, Instructional Guide, and consultant) dug into learning, got certified as a personal trainer with a host of additional specialty training. I started my own business called Grit & Grace and started looking for clients then another friend told me about this studio called Mecha that she just went to that I would love (because it was so hard) and they were looking for instructors. I was still really new to this new career path and was not confident at all in my abilities or whether I made the right decision to leave this stable career for a complete unknown. I had just injured my knee in a race but went in for an audition and the rest is history. I feel in love with Mecha right away. I started teaching HIIT and Resistance classes became the CARDIO+ Director and am now the Studio Director.

I am completely inspired every day, in every class by the people who come to the studio. I believe so strongly in the programming that we offer and it is only getting better. People come in for a variety of reasons but everyone leaves feeling empowered by their capabilities.

Has it been a smooth road?
I have recently come to realize how smooth or rough the road is based on your perspective of the situation. Life and business (no matter who’s life or what business it is) is full of obstacles, how we view them and approach them define the journey. So I would say it has been a smooth road with obstacles along the way to learn from- which is a gift.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Mecha is a boutique studio in the heart of Boulder offering a completely unique high-intensity, low impact fitness program with an incredible community of clients, members, instructors, and hosts. The name Mecha comes from the word Mechanical. Our programs build on the concept of using specific machines (the Lagree Megaformer, VersaClimber, Concept2 SkiErg, and Schwinn Airdyne bikes) to our mechanical advantage so we can get deeper into our exercises and challenge our perceived limits to build physical and mental strength. We are the only Lagree certified studio in Boulder and combine Lagree (Mecha Resistance) classes with a variety of unique high-intensity, low-impact, cardio, and strength training (CARDIO+) classes. Both our Resistance and CARDIO+ programs provide science-based, effective, and efficient workouts. Our classes range from 30 to 60 minutes long. Our goal is for our community to come together, work hard safely and sustainably and have fun doing it (or you work so hard that it feels fun once you are done).

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
There are a lot of fitness options in Boulder, which makes it hard for new businesses. However, Boulderites love to be active, so in that sense, it is a great place for the fitness industry, particularly business models that bring a unique or different approach to fitness than what is already being offered.
