Meet Meg Mothershed of Mothershed Design Company in Capitol Hill Neighborhood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meg Mothershed.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve wanted to own my own business since I was six years old—from lemonade stands, selling birdhouses, to a pet advice business, I was born to be an entrepreneur. I joined my husband and business partner, Josiah full-time in our business last summer and now we’re going into our third year of business.

Josiah started Mothershed Design Company in the fall of 2016 after leaving his previous position as a graphic designer at a local branding agency. The business quickly became successful, but with a growing client base and endless to-do list, he needed someone he could trust to help turn a one-man show into a full-fledged business. Already being partners in life, joining forces with my husband in business was a no-brainer.

As a husband-wife team, we know the difference in having a supportive business partner can make in building a business. Starting and growing a business is incredibly challenging, and going it alone can be even more difficult. Having a partner to share both your successes and failures with help prevent burnout and gives you the drive to build something bigger than either of you can do alone. Working alongside my husband has proved to be such a joy, and our relationship truly strengthens our business.

Has it been a smooth road?
Entrepreneurship is never easy, but it is worth it. The first hurdle I encountered on my journey was leaving my previous position as an in-house designer at a nonprofit organization. Departing my full-time job to join my husband meant finally achieving our dreams of running a successful design studio, but it also meant leaving the safety net of a regular paycheck. After months of planning, a few tears, and several late night meltdowns questioning if this was the right decision, I was able to confidently leave my job and start a new career as a small business owner that I had always wanted.

Having now been a full partner in the business for almost a year, I’ve encountered new and often daily challenges. From making huge financial decisions to realizing you can’t do everything yourself, running a business offers countless opportunities for learning and growth. Ultimately, to be successful you must be comfortable with being uncomfortable. I’ve learned that it’s through making mistakes and continuously putting yourself out there that end up making you a better business owner.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My husband, Josiah and I own Mothershed Design Company, a design and branding studio located here in Denver. We help small businesses thrive in four essential areas: branding, graphic design, web design, and copywriting. We use our expertise to help our clients define their brand, speak to their audience, stand out from the competition, and build a strong foundation for the future. As brand specialists, we are adept at unifying brands across print, digital, and web platforms, and love working with clients across a variety of industries.

We’re passionate about supporting organizations that do good and work with several local nonprofit, education-based organizations including Northeast Denver Innovation Zone, Third Way Center, and Clayton Early Learning. We love supporting their missions through strategic design and branding and have learned so much about what it means to truly empower someone through our involvement.

At Mothershed Design Company, we believe in creating a strategic, thoughtful, and highly conceptual design. There is no magic formula for building a successful brand. It takes dedication, vision, and the right approach to make it all happen. Through our three-step process of Discovery, Design, and Delivery, we work directly with our clients to gain insight into their business, create a compelling design, and deliver results that help their businesses succeed.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
My husband, Josiah is a Colorado native and I’m originally from the east coast. We met in Denver six years ago and now call the city our home. Our whole lives are here, so it only made sense to start our business here as well.

Whether through networking events, educational workshops, or social groups, this city has so much to offer small business owners. We’ve found such a welcoming, supportive entrepreneurial community in Denver, and have been given the amazing opportunity to contribute our knowledge and skills to other businesses through our work. We are honored to be a part of their story and many others within the Denver community.
