Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie and William Bloom.
Melanie and William, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My interest in Fashion really began because of my grandparents who owned a department store (the Dorn Mercantile) in the small town of Newton, Illinois. As a mercantile, they really sold all kinds of goods, but I was always drawn to the clothing displays. After spending a couple of years attending college at UNC, I took off for Paris, France to experience and study fashion and textiles. Upon returning to Colorado, I jumped right in as a fashion representative in the mid 80’s and after a couple successful years in retail sales, I struck out on my own with my first company, “Melanie and Co.”
For the next 30 years, I crisscrossed the US and traveled to Europe, representing at least 20 different top quality women’s clothing and lingerie manufacturers. If the products weren’t great quality and, just as importantly, have a really good fit, then I wouldn’t represent them. But even this didn’t guarantee all the companies would be completely successful, sometimes the companies couldn’t supply the product on-demand or as basic as just not being organized and losing orders. With the increasing challenges of health issues, it became more and more difficult to keep up the grueling “Road Warrior” routine and after reducing the travel to the western half of the country and finally to only the states immediately bordering Colorado it became apparent to my new husband and myself that we would need to embark on a new adventure. What that adventure would eventually look like took a lot of time, discussion and discovery.
While we are still learning and discovering things about ourselves, we started by looking at what in my past, I was really passionate about. I realized that I enjoyed almost everything about what I had been doing, but what I enjoyed most was seeing that look on a woman’s face when she has found that special outfit that truly makes her feel elegant and confident enough to take on the world. Thus, began Three Blooms boutique (threeblooms.com), an online women’s boutique selling quality products at affordable prices. A place where the busy woman can come, spend a little time spoiling herself with beautiful clothing that compliments her own style. This all started over five years ago with the basic mission to “Be the reason a woman smiles today.”
The products we carry on our website offer the best quality and design the fashion industry has to offer at an affordable price. We continually watch for new products to offer and will from time to time, add a new line when something good comes along. In this way of thinking, we have just embarked on our own manufacturing effort with the help of a third Bloom, Zach. We believe the self-adhesive bra segment of the industry is sorely underserved. Several of the lines I have represented over the years were lingerie and there are some very good lines out there, but I felt there was room for a more functional and more comfortable self-adhesive bra. Thus the “Blooms” bra was born this past year. Our design covers and supports better than existing brands and has the adhesive more strategically placed. We think women will see this as an alternative to the bra they wear every day.
In addition to becoming a manufacturer we are also exploring alternative forms of retail to the traditional Brick & Mortar. This past week we entered into an agreement with a local brick & mortar shop to combine our products with Details boutique in Littleton. Together we are going mobile with what we are calling “ShopUp” and you’ll find us on Larimer Square this summer in one of the tents, and in individual homes with our Shopping Parties.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As in many new startups, you jump in with both feet not fully recognizing all the difficulties you might encounter. In that regard, my husband and I are very similar because we look at obstacles and difficulties not as problems but as opportunities. Looking back on our experience, the one area we’ve had to grow the most in is marketing. As a clothing rep, I understand fit, comfort, durability and style, as a mechanical engineer, my husband understands… well, problem-solving, financing and just thinking outside the box, but neither one of us had much experience in marketing or the social platform.
Since we both love a challenge, learning new things and we tend to be creative in our solutions, we are making it work. Some of what we first thought people would like turned out to be only mediocre, listening to our customers and studying the social media and general marketplace has resulted in changes to the products we offer, and we are doing much better now. We added a wonderful Marketing/Advertising department last year and are growing every day.
Please tell us about Three Blooms Boutique.
Looking generally at successful companies in the marketplace, there are usually a couple things in common with the most successful companies. First, is providing a quality product, the second is providing the best service possible. People like to feel special when they purchase something, and they like to know they have purchased a quality product. You quickly forget about that low price if the product doesn’t last or isn’t quite what you wanted, and you tend to remember a place when they go the extra mile to make it a fun experience.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
We have always taken the approach that the problems encountered are merely opportunities and we’ve tried to make the most of these opportunities. Early on we recognized that marketing would be the most challenging and this is where we focused most of our efforts. Recently, we hired a wonderful professional photographer to do a photoshoot and the pictures we have received, I believe, will help us reach a broader base. If there is anything we might do differently, it would be to set this up sooner.
