Meet Michelle Hooper of Hello Coffee in Green Mountain

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Hooper.

Michelle, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I didn’t really even drink coffee until I was in college. It was always a very social thing; meeting up at the coffee shop to hang out with friends or to study was just what everyone did. It wasn’t until I finished school and moved home that it really became a lifestyle for me. Despite having no experience, I got a job working in a little shop in Denver and quickly fell in love with the industry. It has always been really important for me to feel creatively fulfilled in my daily life, so once I learned just how much artistry goes into creating the perfect latte, I was hooked. Being able to talk to new and interesting people every day was the cherry on top! After a few years of learning and experimenting and dreaming, I decided to strike out on my own. Hello Coffee opened in 2016 and I could not be more proud of my little shop!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A new business really is like a newborn baby. It needs every bit of my time and attention to help it grow, which can be hard sometimes. Missing out on dinners, parties, and vacations isn’t always easy or fun. But no one else is going to love and nurture this baby as I do, so it just has to come before everything else right now. That said, there are way worse places to have to spend all of my time! There is life within the struggle and I am so grateful for the beautiful little moments that remind me of that every single day.

Please tell us about Hello Coffee.
Our motto is “Who says coffee has to be so serious?”

We love finding new ways to make your cuppa joe a really fun experience. Quirky flavor combinations are our jam! We’ve got over 20 different specialty lattes on our ever-growing menu. We aren’t afraid to try anything… Ghost pepper mocha? Sure! Root beer float latte? Absolutely! There is a great big world of flavor out there, so why just limit ourselves to the “safe” stuff?

Our staff is always creating and working hard, but we also make it a top priority to connect with our customers. Getting to know the people in our community is the best part of this gig. Everyone has a story to tell and we are always happy and eager to hear it! When our customers walk in our door, they’re coming home.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My whole life I’ve sort of marched to the beat of a different drum. My amazing parents always made a point to acknowledge and encourage those pieces of me when I was growing up. Sometimes, that meant dying my hair pink or convincing my mom to paint big 60’s flowers all over my walls, or stealing my dad’s vinyl collection to dance to Billy Idol. I was always free to be whoever I needed to be, and I think that helped give me the courage to create a pretty unique business. I never would have felt empowered to do what I do without that lifetime of support.
