Meet Mikaila of Hamilton Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikaila.

Mikaila, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up my family didn’t have a lot of money. My mom did not have a nice camera, but she felt photos were important, so she used plastic disposable cameras to capture mine as well as my brother’s and sister’s childhood. Once the camera was filled, we would go to Costco and get the photos developed. Almost on a daily basis, I would flip through the pages of those photo books filled with 4×6 images of the various celebrations, holidays, and just everyday memories. I always loved the idea of being a photographer, but couldn’t afford a nice camera. It wasn’t until I was dating my now husband when I got my first camera. Shortly after we got married, we moved to the East Coast near my in-laws. My mother-in-law is also a photographer and we spent that first summer together traveling throughout the area taking photos of the world around us.

As I felt more confident in my skills, I decided to establish my business doing portraits. It was a slow process, but I gained a lot of experience in portrait, wedding, and event photography when living on the East Coast. Since moving to the Denver area a little over a year ago, I have become a mother, so establishing my business here has been a slow process. Despite that, I have expanded into also doing real estate photography, which I never thought would be something I would love as much as I do. As I move forward, my goal is and always has been to provide high-quality photos for those who need them at a reasonable price. I want everyone to have to opportunity to have the photos they want or need without paying a heavy price. I understand more than many the struggle of wanting great photos, but not being able to pay what many professional photographers are charging. I absolutely love what I do and I want to share it with everyone!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t think anybody has it smooth when trying to do something they love, but I can say it has been an enjoyable journey filled with many lessons learned. Although I have had some not as easygoing clients, the outcome has always been positive.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a photographer. I do portrait photography, which includes families, maternity, newborns, milestones, seniors, and business headshots. I also do wedding, event, and real estate photography. I am most proud of the fact that I do not charge an extremely high rate for the quality of photos I give to my clients, I have a fast turnaround on each session, and I try to make each of my sessions an enjoyable experience.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always very outgoing and I still am. I love and still love science, the outdoors, and of course photography. My family has always been the most important thing to me.
