Meet Mona Lucero

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mona Lucero.

Mona, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was one of those kids who drew a lot and I realized at a very young age, I wanted to be an artist. I went to art school at the University of Colorado in Denver. Although I always found fashion interesting, in my senior year of art school, I became more aware of the professional aspects of fashion design and began to consider a career in fashion.

Upon graduation, I decided to apply to the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York for Fashion Design. After receiving my Associate Degree in Fashion Design, I returned to Denver and started my career.

I have worked in a variety of industry jobs. I eventually started my own line, opened my first boutique in Lower Highlands and created custom and wholesale clothing. I’m about to open a new boutique called Shop Mona Lucero.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While designing for a Denver-based active wear manufacturing company which sold nationally, I realized that my design ideas sold well which gave me the confidence to start my own line. My first store was open for ten years through a difficult economy, opening in November of 2001 and keeping the shop open through the recession of 2008 and a few years beyond that. I’ve continued my business with online sales, custom design and popups and throughout, many of my customers have stayed in touch. I’m excited to reintroduce my line to new patrons.

Please tell us about Mona Lucero.
I’m proud to say that my business is about great, unique, original clothing and personal service. My clothing is intended to help my customers to express themselves. It’s meant to be flattering on the body. My work is eclectic. You can find both elegant clothing and whimsical clothing in my line.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory is being probably around five years old and my then teenage brother Al coming to visit from San Francisco, wearing the coolest new clothes and playing the latest music while he danced and sang to it and my sister and I watched and laughed, enthralled.
