Today we’d like to introduce you to Naomi Cook.
Naomi, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Looking back over the past several years, I see two considerable influences that have fueled my journey and led me to where I am today. First, however silly it may sound, was my discovery of The Food Network and, specifically, Giada De Laurentiis. I was just out of college at the time and, being on my own opened the door to new discoveries and the ever lingering question of what do I love and love doing. Watching The Food Network and, again, Giada, literally birthed something in me. The creativity with which she cooked, turned what had always been an interest into an absolute passion. I truly consider her a virtual mentor, having inspired me to delve into creating and cooking recipes of my own.
Secondly, was the support and encouragement I received from my husband. This is now more than ten years later…not just a short blip in time. I had quit my job in Denver, having to relocate to southern Colorado after getting married. I was in a state of flux, wondering what to do next career-wise. My husband put no pressure on me but encouraged me to simply pursue anything I loved. This led to a number of conversations with him, each time coming back to the topics of food, cooking and creativity. To say the least, we brainstormed idea after idea…cooking school, applying for any and all cooking positions in local restaurants, and even opening a food truck. Each of those ideas, however, lacked “something.” It wasn’t until later that year while driving to Minnesota for Christmas, where I told him about a YouTube video I had recently seen. Immediately, he suggested that I start a food blog. And although that hit an immediate mark in my head and heart, I initially blew it off.
However, the idea kept lingering and was the one plan that would not let go. And, with continual encouragement and prompting by my husband, I finally decided to rip off the bandaid, put my fears aside, and officially start a food blog! And the first thing I needed was a name. A Life Delicious, was born shortly thereafter during an evening walk with my husband.
As I had never created a website, much less and entire blog–which consists of setting up a hosting provider, choosing a theme, Google analytics, SEO, Google Adsense, et cetera–it took a ton of research, help from fellow bloggers, and much support from other professionals in the field. All in all, it took three months to complete. But, the entire process was so much fun and absolutely solidified that it was the right decision. There’s definitely something to be said for conquering the unknown and fulfilling a dream. It’s simply exhilarating!
Fast forward to now–slightly over two years since my first blog post–and it has been such a cool ride. I’m beyond grateful that I took that plunge. I still struggle with putting myself out there at times, but through doing so have grown my followers, established an amazing brand partnership with Beeyond The Hive Honey here in Colorado, and have even received swag from various brands whom I’ve featured in my recipes. And–drum roll–twice thus far, chefs from The Food Network have commented on my work. But, I’m still holding out for a thumbs up from Giada herself!
Has it been a smooth road?
The world of blogging has definitely not been easy! I had no clue what to do when I first got started. So I lived and breathed the, “Learn as you go mentality.” I’ve definitely made mistakes, but that has also been a blessing in disguise, as that is often how we learn best. I’ve grown in my writing abilities and, especially, in my skills as a photographer…which, prior to jumping into blogging, I had none! I mean, bloggers get a lot of flack and are not always seen as legitimate. At the end of the day though, as a blogger, I’m a recipe creator, photographer, writer, social media manager, brand partner and so much more. So much goes into blogging!
Social media is likely the biggest challenge and can take as much time as the blog creations themselves. Certain social platforms don’t give new bloggers a chance to really grow unless you play the game religiously. Instead, many bloggers’ work remains hidden. Ultimately, the blogger loses out on the opportunity to be found by different followers, or work with legitimate brands.
My hope is that as A Life Delicious grows, my viewers will engage with me more and more, and that new brand-partnerships will present themselves.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
A Life Delicious, is a food blog of all the things I enjoy! I create food based upon what I’m interested in and what inspires me. Most of the recipes are recipes that I test and create myself. Everything is then photographed and written by me, and all social media accounts are managed by me as well. So there is an unbelievable amount of work that goes into one single post.
My hope is that A Life Delicious will transport viewers to a place that will engage them to try each recipe and expand their tastes and traditions.
And I’m most proud of my first brand-partnership with Beeyond The Hive Honey. Jacy is super sweet and her family–third generation beekeepers–are some of the hardest working people I know. I am proud to call her my friend and partner! Might I add, it’s the BEST honey on the face of the planet.
