Meet Payton Bernstine of Promise Event Planners in The Highlands

Today we’d like to introduce you to Payton Bernstine.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Payton. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always been an entrepreneur. When I needed money for whatever reason (still not sure what a seven-year-old spends their money on) I would type out a list of assorted services I could offer to my parents with pricing off to the side and ask them what service they would be interested in purchasing. In 5th grade, I would buy wholesale press on nails and put them on for girls in my before and after school program for $10 a set.

In sixth grade, I bought 250 Livestrong Bracelets from China and sold them at school for three dollars a pop. When I was cheering in high school, I made giant cheer bows and sold them to the girls in my gym. This business thing has always been in my blood.

Then I went to college and was more than a little lost in Boulder. I had planned on getting my Psychology and Education degree with the hopes to mold young minds and all that. After my student teaching, I knew that this wasn’t the right place for me. I do distinctly remember sitting down with myself and writing down all of my favorite things. I loved making things pretty, Pinterest, making people happy, love, serving others, planning, more love, and big events. I then started googling jobs that had anything to do with the things I loved. I was searching for Event Planning jobs in Boulder and stumbled upon a listing on craigslist. Like what are the chances? I interviewed and got the job just minutes after interviewing. Within six months at the company, I was planning weddings with the oversite of my mentor as a lead planner and absolutely fell in love with this life.

Once I graduated from school, I got some business cards, built a website from scratch, and started my own company in August of 2015. I guess you could say the rest is history but this story is still so in the works. I didn’t go to school for this, I’m not formally trained, and I don’t have a certificate somewhere that says “certified wedding planner”. I did the work, worked for a LONG time for free, and gained experience in my own way.”

Has it been a smooth road?
Definitely not! I literally started a company straight out of college not having any clue what I was getting into! I never realized that owning your own business meant you were the CEO, marketing team, designer, accountant, clean up crew, website developer, Instagram expert, master networker, therapist, and everything else under the sun. Because of that, I made a lot of little mistakes that I learned big lessons from. I am still trying to figure everything out and how to balance work and life but the struggles are what makes this whole thing so worth it.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Promise Event Planners is a modern wedding planning and event design company based out of Denver, Colorado. We have a love for creative couples with a flair for funky details! We specialize in full-service wedding planning & month of coordination. It is our goal to make the world a little prettier, and we do this by planning fun, modern and personal weddings, and events. We say goodbye to traditions that no longer suit you and hello to fun surprise elements that will keep your guests guessing! We offer easily customizable packages that fit each couple and their unique personalities.

I think my brides fall in love with me and my personality and the expertise I can provide them. I have a dry sense of humor and I cuss like a sailor but I am very calm under pressure. I am artistic, yet professional. I am kind and I am bossy, but I can let people know when I don’t (yet) have the right answer. I think people can relate to that and overall relate to me.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, I absolutely do! I am in the middle of a big trendy city but nice and close to the mountains, Colorado Springs, or anywhere else I need to travel for weddings! I think the community is really accepting and supportive here and I know all cities are not like that. For someone just starting out, I would say to send a lot of email to some of the professionals to look up to most and ask them to get coffee or a drink. Pick their brains and learn as much about them you possibly can. Take notes, seriously! You will learn more from real professionals than any class or webinar!

  • Our packages range from $2,500 to $6,500
