Meet Perry Washington of The Master Piece DJ in Littleton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Perry Washington.

Perry, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started DJing back in Baltimore under my big brother when I was a kid. From there, I joined the Air Force and became the base DJ in upstate New York. After getting out of the Air Force I came to Colorado and really started growing my DJ company as I was working as a Mailman. I did both jobs for many years until my DJ Company grew too big to do both.

I love what I do and I love people and I base the success of my company on that. Money is not what drives my company, it’s the love of people and music. My dad always told me if you do what you love you’ll never work a day in your life and he was so right.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t it always been a smooth ride, 20 years ago I almost lost everything due to substance abuse. Funny thing is if I could turn back the hands of time I would not take it back. What I went through and learned changed my life for the best. I now help other people to break their addictions as I help feed the homeless every week. A church in Denver 20 years ago turned my life around. That Church is called Church In The City with Pastor Michael Walker and he played a big part in my life and I still serve at that church today.

Please tell us about The Master Piece DJ.
I love owning my own company and I take a lot of pride in treating people right. I don’t take a deposit. I do over 120 shows a year without advertising or any signs at my events. I go under the old philosophy, if I do my job well, people will come to me and ask for a business card and they do. My company is a five-star company and I consistently stay booked over a year out. I’m proud of after 20 years plus of being in business as a 5 Star Company I still don’t advertise and it’s all word-of-mouth. I carry great equipment but most of all I listen to my clients and I treat them with respect. I also have many many repeat customers and some families where I have done weddings for all of their children.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My dad telling me that I can do anything if I put my mind to it. Most of all riding in my dad‘s station wagon in the backseat that faced backward with my brother and I pulling our Hot Wheels cars behind our dad’s car with a string. Needless to say, we lost many Hot wheels cars having fun. One other thing is the lesson I learned about business being a paper boy back in Baltimore, show up on time and give it your all and do what you say.
