Meet Piper Rastello

Today we’d like to introduce you to Piper Rastello.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I picked up a camera when I was 20 years old studying oil painting while living in Rome. I never put the 35 mm black and white camera down. I traveled all around Europe shooting black and white film and developing the film back in the darkroom in Rome.

I fell in love with the process of shooting and developing photos. Upon my return to Los Angeles, I continued to take night classes in photography on top of my regular course load. Upon graduation, I decided to move to Africa and bring my camera with me. I traveled to 12 different countries throughout the continent and documented as much as I could, falling deeper in love with the art.

Upon my return to the USA, I returned to school to attain my Associates Degree in Photography and move to Nashville to pursue my dream of shooting Album Covers for various artists. My career took me on the road with everyone from the Black Keys to the Backstreet Boys. I learned a lot during my years in Nashville, but eventually, my journey leads me home to Denver. It is in Denver that I have continued my business shooting for Adventure Travel Magazines and companies in addition to model portfolios. I love my work and look forward to seeing how my career develops.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The competitiveness of the photography industry can be extremely trying at times. Especially within the modeling world. I came to find that the more I compared my work to others, the more unhappy I became. It took me letting go of the expectations of others in order to truly find my style and voice within the industry.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I do not really believe in luck. I think luck is when preparation meets opportunity. I have always prided myself in taking the opportunities that life presents to me, especially if those opportunities scare me a little bit. I love to challenge myself, and by saying yes to the opportunities that have come my way, no matter if I succeed or fail miserably, I always come out a little smarter, better, or inspired by the experience.
