Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Havel.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My business formed rather organically. It started out as a passion that naturally evolved into small photography jobs through people who knew me. Inevitably, the inquiries increased and I made a decision to make this a business. In 2012, I decided to focus primarily on weddings and it’s been amazing since then. Regardless of how organic something may form, the truth is that every business takes a ridiculous amount of hard work and patience. I’m so grateful to have built my business to be what it is today and am just as motivated and eager today as I was seven years ago.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Everyone is always looking for a clear road to find success. However, there’s no such thing. The reality is, while there may be important steps to take, we are all going to pave our own path. We all have to answer our own questions as to what success is to us, and how much are we capable of putting in; emotionally, physically, financially, etc.
For me, this has changed year after year. I am a wife and a mother of three children, so there were certainly challenges faced in trying to balance all that. Thankfully, my husband is insanely supportive and never complains about my work schedule. I know that if I didn’t have the support that I do, my business would look completely different today.
It’s kind of the blessing of running your own business; you get to craft it to support the life you want to live. If you know where you want to go and what you want it to look like, you instantly know what is worthy of your time.
I make a point to evaluate my business each year, and ask myself what has worked, what hasn’t worked, and where am I wanting to go. There have certainly been years that I didn’t think I could keep going on. Then I realized that I just needed to readjust the amount of work I took on, who I worked with, and how I set up my personal life to support my schedule as well.
Owning a business literally involves blood, sweat, and tears, but it is an incredibly rewarding experience as well.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am an internationally published, award-winning destination wedding photographer for stylish couples. As a visionary, I believe in creating unforgettable wedding experiences. I love to connect and engage with my couples individually. This allows me to capture moments seen and unseen; giving each couple the freedom to be fully present, and providing them with a visual story that is unique, inspired, and personal.
I’m so honored to have worked with many of the top wedding planners in the nation and have been featured in Harper’s Bazaar, Martha Stewart Weddings, Brides, and more.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Being a good human is #1 in creating a successful business. It sounds so obvious, but the moment someone makes their business self centered, they will find issues.
I believe life should be grounded in love, gratitude, and inspiration. These values are fundamental to any aspect of life and business and are a vital prerequisite to success.
I’m in constant pursuit of knowledge and you’ll always find a business book in my hands or a business podcast on my drives. Having a constant thirst to grow, improve, and challenge your goals, is such an important part of the business.
Last, I would say: be humble, ask a lot of questions, Google is your BFF, and create a close network of people who can love of you, be honest with you, and help you press in towards your goals.
