Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Ridgeway.
Rachel, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My passion for working with seniors started at the early age of 16. I got my first job as a waitress at a local senior living community near my hometown of McHenry, Illinois. I was a pretty terrible waitress, but quickly realized I loved getting to know my regular residents. I worked in a variety of roles after that to try to find my “niche” in senior living. It wasn’t until I graduated college that I (unknowingly) found my dream job. I was offered a role to be the personal trainer for a senior living community right here in Denver. The job was PERFECT for me, and I loved showing up for it every day.
However, I needed to do a little bit of soul searching first to be sure that this was where I was truly meant to be. I felt like I needed to try my hand at corporate America and use my brand new degree to make sure that wasn’t a path I was supposed to take. After seven years of working in HR Software Consulting, I realized I wasn’t happy. I kept thinking back to my job as a trainer, and finally something clicked for me. I had found my calling all those years ago and just needed to take this time to figure that out. I quit my job and started Ridge Senior Fitness and haven’t looked back since.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been the smoothest road. Who knew 2020 was going to throw a global pandemic at us? I started the business in February of this year and pretty quickly had to pivot. I started doing mostly online classes and individual sessions and have been slowly reintroducing in-person training. Obviously, the health and safety of my clients is my top priority, so I’ve been taking all the necessary precautions outlined by the CDC. I’m looking forward to the day where I can do more in-person training since that is what I enjoy most about my job!
Ridge Senior Fitness – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
When I decided to start Ridge Senior Fitness, it was always with one sole focus in mind: seniors. Unlike most other training companies, we only work with clients 70 years old and better. We offer in-home and online personal training and group fitness classes focusing on strength, balance, and mobility.
Taking care of our seniors has always been a passion of mine. While there is definitely not a shortage of personal trainers (especially in Denver), so few are focused on just the senior population. There is a huge need for people who want to work with seniors in all capacities – fitness is just one avenue. I’m so proud to have started a company that amplifies that message in our community. We need more of it!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I was working with one of my in-person clients last week, and she mentioned how hard the pandemic has been on her. She is extremely social and just misses being around people. She told me that lately she has felt like an animal trapped in a cage, and is now so excited for our sessions because it gives her something to look forward to each week.
It was one of those moments that instantly made me feel so thankful for this job and this company. It was such a simple affirmation that made me feel like I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.
