Meet Sana Hasan of Make Up By Sana in Aurora

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sana Hasan.

Sana, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I discovered at a very young age that I loved make-up, fashion and dressing up. Growing up in a Muslim family, make up was discouraged before marriage. Despite the fact my father not approving of my passion for make up and fashion, I would secretly save up lunch and any allowance money just to buy make up. Back then we didn’t have make up tutorial videos through Social Media. Instead, I would purchase popular magazines and recreate make up looks that caught my attention. Through trial and error, I practiced these looks until I mastered them.

My professional journey in the make up industry began at 22 with Estee Lauder where I was hired as a Counter Manager. I had initially applied for the Beauty Specialist position. But after I demonstrated my artistry skills, which were self-taught, during the final interview, I was offered the Counter Manager position instead. At that time, I was also working for British Airways and was in my senior year at Metropolitan State University.

After I graduated from College, I went on to working for the government as a contractor. However, I missed the creativity side of me and decided to work as a freelance artist with Estee Lauder on the weekends.

Working for the government in San Diego, I realized how much I did not enjoy administrative work and being behind the computer screen for 8 hours or more a day. I was very unhappy with my career and my life at that time; I was in a very dark place. I remember someone at that time laughed at me when I said to him, “I think I want to be a makeup artist.” Maybe not as a full-time job but would love to run my own business on the weekends. This individual discouraged me so much to a point where I stopped thinking about my passion and instead continued to work at a place I did not enjoy at all. It was not until my family finally told me take control of my life and encouraged me to follow my dreams and do what makes me happy. I decided to quit my government job, move back to Colorado from San Diego and start over.

The first thing I did when I came back to Denver was applied with MAC to become a makeup artist. I landed a part-time position with them and quickly became one of their top selling artists. I learned a lot about artistry with MAC and really enjoyed working there. However, my goal was always to keep makeup as my passion and eventually start my weekend business for events, such as weddings. Working in retail, that was not going to happen. Therefore, I started looking for a job that can turn into my career, and in 2015 I found my dream job with Land Title and decided to open my make up business on the weekends.

Last year when I was asked to compete in Mrs. Colorado beauty pageant for 2019, I thought this would be the best platform to share my experience and encourage others to always follow your dreams! My message is to empower young adults by example on how to build and exude confidence. The confidence to believe in your dreams. The confidence to always work through your roadblocks. The confidence to believe in you.

Today with the support of my loved ones, I live the life I ALWAYS dreamt of. I have my dream career with Land Title, I have my own Make Up business I run on the weekends and I live a happy life surrounded by my family, my husband and my beautiful 11-month-old daughter!

Has it been a smooth road?
Not at all. I had many obstacles. I had someone discourage and me and laugh at me when I talked about the idea of becoming a Make Up artist. I had no idea where to start. I had no money to invest in products. Starting a business, big or small, you have to make an investment before you can expect a return. I didn’t have the money or support. I worked for a job where I was making close to minimum wage and a relationship where I was bullied on a daily basis. Every day was a challenge to stay happy let alone focus on starting a business.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Make Up By Sana – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Make Up By Sana is a business where the goal is to make EVERYONE feel beautiful. I love to enhance and accentuate their beauty with my artistic skills.

I specialize in ALL looks, I can do any type of make up from super natural to very dramatic and everything in between.

I am most known for how quick I can do a full face make up while giving my clients exactly what they want. I typically do a full face make up in 20-25 minutes or less. However, my quick timing does not compromise in the quality or the look my client wants. That’s what sets me apart.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Denver for the 4 seasons, the growing diversity and the natural beauty. Colorado, in my opinion, is one of the most beautiful states offering such beautiful nature. No one in the country and compete with our Natural beauty!

The thing I like least about Denver is how quickly it has grown and how crowded it is getting. But I guess I can’t blame people. I would want to move to Denver Colorado too if I didn’t live here.
