Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Goodlaxson.
Sarah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After moving across the country in pursuit of my aspirations in 2017, I launched Modern Co. Marketing at the end of 2019. Modern Co. Marketing focuses on digital marketing, branding, content creation and marketing strategy. The mission is to help as many womxn as possible to build their businesses through marketing and branding.
From my own life experiences, I have seen how powerful it is when womxn help build other womxn, especially when we historically haven’t had a seat at the table. The work that I do is incredibly rewarding. Today, as I continue to build Modern Co. Marketing, I am also a student at the University of Denver, where I was named a Daniels Scholar and will graduate with a Masters of Science in Marketing in 2021. To top it off, I’m working on a book, as well! Life is an endless evolution and I hope where I am “today” is a small drop in the pond to where I’ll be tomorrow. I wish the exact same for each of my clients.
Has it been a smooth road?
I grew up as an adopted child in a new religious Christian movement (often referred to as a cult by ex-members), where women are dramatically undervalued. As a child, I didn’t have many aspirations outside of being a homemaker and I knew nothing about the great world that surrounded me. I did, however, have a penchant for learning, growing, and finding incredible womxn around me to be inspired by and soon began to aspire to be more.
After marrying within the religion at 18 years of age, I shockingly found myself divorced only one short year later and was socially outcast from the religion. I left, but soon after fell into an abusive relationship where domestic violence quickly became the norm. In order to save my life and the lives of my wonderful parents, I moved to Michigan in 2010.
Those Michigan years are ones I’ll always cherish. Working my way through college, juggling multiple jobs and internships, I finally graduated and made my way into the real world. All the while, I was still learning what the world was about! I’d never been part of “normal society” until then.
Moving to Colorado in 2017 was a fresh start, and then unresolved trauma came a knocking once again. I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and PTSD in 2019. Those diagnoses became the catalyst in my decision to launch Modern Co. Marketing and to finally apply to grad school! Building a business is always challenging and rewarding, but challenges are something I’m used to. Bring them on!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Modern Co. Marketing story. Tell us more about the business.
Modern Co. Marketing specializes in digital marketing, branding, content creation and marketing strategy. The mission is to help as many womxn-owned businesses as humanly possible.
I’m incredibly proud of the connections and relationships that are built with each client. Through my life experiences, which feel like multiple lifetimes, I’m better able to help each incredible womxn I’m honored to call my client. We build truly authentic relationships and connect on a deeper level than you’ll find in most business environments and their results show how powerful that truly is. When I say that I’m grateful for every step of the way, I mean it!
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality are going to become staples in the marketing industry, and have already started making their mark. I predict that Experiential Marketing will also become more highly sought after as digital continues to create more noise around the consumer that marketers and businesses have to try and sift through.
