Today we’d like to introduce you to Satia Herrera.
Hi Satia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Skincare, nails, hair, and makeup were always an interest for me growing up. In 2018, the popularity of beauty influencers and professionals took over and was around the time that I became a counter manager at M.A.C Cosmetics. After a year of working full-time, and although I loved my job, I decided that I wanted to pursue becoming a self-employed freelance makeup artist as it would allow me to have a flexible schedule and higher pay while still being committed to what I thought was my passion at the time. An esthetics license is a requirement to become a freelance makeup artist in Colorado, so I began the esthetics program at Avalon School of Cosmetology in 2019 and fell in love with esthetics and skincare while there. I worked my way through the program as a freelance artist under M.A.C and finished the 600 credit hours in just under six months by attending full-time. I passed both state exams and officially became a licensed esthetician a month before COVID shut down the entire world. Having only worked as an esthetician for a month before losing my job, I was devastated when I had just barely touched what I found to be my lifelong career. As unemployment began to roll out, I started stashing away money to purchase my own equipment to hopefully use in my own space someday.
Eventually, I started using my spare bedroom in my apartment to take family and friends as clients to practice services while I waited to return to work. As I got into the flow of having a few appointments, working for myself started to become a reality sooner than I had anticipated. When the return to work came back around, I left my job at the time and found a suite rental a few minutes from my house. I spent a few months getting the space set up and branding myself. Thus, Esthetically Skin Therapy was born! Because COVID was still pretty heavy around the start of my business, it was a slower start outside of friends and family as my clients. Now, after almost three years of being open, I have clients from all parts of town different backgrounds, stories, and lifestyles. I have continued my esthetics education since opening and became certified in various other services to offer my clients and have had so much fun doing so. I’m blessed to have been able to work for myself for the past few years and am thankful to those who have continued to support me since the start of this path.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Deciding to leave a typical job with consistent pay is never an easy decision. Especially in the height of a global pandemic. Being a young, afrolatina, female, small business owner also presents its own difficulties. Sometimes the months are extremely slow, unsure, and trying. As a business owner, sometimes you don’t know the things you don’t know. In March of 2020, I found out I was pregnant. Although a very exciting time for my husband and I, the realization that I would be working all the way up until labor to save as much as possible for maternity leave was overwhelming. While I was still dealing with the remnants of COVID, I was now facing losing clientele for at least three months altogether. Because I have such wonderful familial support, all was well and I went back to work sooner than I anticipated and was greeted with many new clients with open and welcoming arms. Some days are still harder than others, but the passion for aesthetics was what got me here and is what will keep me here.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Esthetically Skin Therapy?
As the sole owner and esthetician at Esthetically Skin Therapy, I provide various types of advanced facial treatments such as microneedling, microdermabrasion, dermaplaning, and chemical peels, eyelash extensions, brow and lash lift-tint services, waxing services, and occasionally makeup services. Because I specialize in a majority of areas in esthetics, I am a one-stop-shop! I have invested in myself as a business owner and have been able to continue not only my aesthetics education but my business education as well. I’m very passionate about giving back to my clients and have partnered with Cherry Financing to give existing and potential clients the opportunity to make services more affordable for everyone. I offer a wide range of services including services for those who are just learning about skincare, all the way to those who have been getting services done for a handful of years. From skincare and makeup lessons to 4-hour long pampering bridal packages, I always want my business to be surrounded by the love for inclusivity for all. I am always looking for new and exciting additions for Esthetically and am ecstatic about where my brand is heading. Keep an eye out to see what is new!
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Aside from supporting small business owners, women, and POC in business, I am also pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Victim Services at the University of Colorado Denver with intention to become a Victim’s Advocate for women and children of domestic and sexual violence. Violence against women and children is and has been a worldwide pandemic and calls for more attention and education. While most use their college degree for career advancement, I have been blessed with grants and scholarships that cover the cost of college and am committed to using my degree to give back to communities and those in need. While aesthetics is my passion, victim advocacy is my purpose.
