Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Clarke.
Shelby, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
What started as a dream to create beautiful interiors as an interior designer, transformed into working as a fashion stylist and blogger. The journey there was a confusing one to say the least but has become clear.
After multiple moves and jobs that left me, unfulfilled to say the least, I become a fashion stylist with a well-known brand. While working, I discovered all the principles that I found informational and grounding in Interior Design were also important to a well put together outfit. Accessories weren’t seen as unnecessary flourishes anymore but thoughtful additions to complete an outfit.
I recognized balance, texture, and color in new ways that challenged me & my clients. It was also during this time, I began to see how destructive our consumption of fashion was for our planet and for many of the workers. Through a series of friends and blogs, I found small but mighty brands with the dream that you can empower artisan makers in developing nations and look cute at the same time.
Stylishly Shelby is a safe place for others who wanted to make radical changes to their closets when they had nowhere to start. The mission of Stylishly Shelby is to encourage women to buy fair trade, ethically made, and sustainably made products for their closets that give them confidence while empowering artisans and small businesses. Today, I regularly blog about ethical fashion for both the beginner and those who’ve already made meaningful changes. I share styling tips for the adventurous and cautious alike, and easily accessible brands with transparent supply chains so readers can feel confident about their decisions and closets.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Life leading up to the realization that this was where I needed to be was like hiking through the wilderness without a map. My biggest struggles were taking collaborations on my blog that certainly didn’t align with my mission. Over the last few years, I’ve narrowed down who and what I will and want to work with. Brands now have to fit my narrow guidelines to be featured, these include: does your brand offer a living wage, safe workplace, and benefits? Is this product beautiful, functional, and well-priced? Do they use recycled, or upcycled materials or perhaps a more eco-friendly packaging or off-sets?
Some obstacles I’m struggling with right now is getting paid partnerships from brands to promote their products and finding individuals passionate about empowering women globally that are willing to make lifestyle changes.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Stylishly Shelby story. Tell us more about your work.
