Meet Sophie Crespi of Essence Event Planning

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophie Crespi.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Just like any other young working professional, people always ask me what I want to do with my life, what I’m going to use my degree for, or what my dream is. Truthfully, my dream is to get married and have a family one day, but until that day comes, I’m very open-minded about where life will take me.

Essence began on a whim. I’ve always been the “planner”. I was always the one planning homecoming, graduation parties, holiday gatherings, etc. After graduating from the University of Kansas with a degree in Sport Management and Business, I landed a marketing internship with The Denver Broncos. It was the hardest and most rewarding period of my life thus far. Myself and three other interns took on a role of planning and executing some of the biggest events that the Broncos organization puts on throughout the year. We hit the ground running when we first stepped into Mile High Stadium and honestly, I couldn’t be more thankful for how much it pushed me to become a visionary and see the entire picture of an event and, at the same time, learn to cater to every single detail that went into it.

As my internship came to an end, an opportunity to work in Boulder, my home town, just fell into my lap. For the past year, I’ve been working for Buffalo Sports Properties as a part of The University of Colorado Athletics. I love what I do for CU… I love my coworkers, our clients, the fans, gameday… I love it all! But at some point within the last year, I realized that one day I want to be my own boss, continue to do what I love, have kids, and be able to contribute to the household income all from the comfort of my own home.

During the fall, I sat down with one of my close friends from high school who needed help planning the opening of her boutique, Laura’s A Boutique, and I knew it was time to just pull the trigger. I thought to myself, “I have so much life to live. Why should I wait until I have kids to start a company when I can get it off the ground now and have a solid business when that time comes?” So I did it, and the opening for Laura’s was a huge success!

I don’t have big expectations for Essence right off the bat. I know that it will take time to build clientele and that all I can do is continue to be committed to where I’m at right now, start to build relationships, put myself out there, and trust that everything is going to happen how it’s supposed to.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
So far so good! I’m in the midst of solidifying dates for events but have a handful of really great leads. The hardest part for me was being worried that it might fail, but I’m thankful that I have a steady job that I love that also allows me to have the flexibility to have Essence on the side. At this point, I don’t think it will fail! I could have a couple of clients in a year and continue to work for CU, or Essence could take off and I could be event planning full time!

Like I said, I know it will take time! Patience is truly a virtue. You can’t speed up time. All you can do is take life day by day, work your hardest and know whatever is to be, will be.

Please tell us about Essence Event Planning.
Essence Event Planning is essentially every mid to small size business’ biggest helper when it comes to planning, organizing and executing events. It can be so difficult for businesses and individuals to plan an event when they so many other things on their plate! Whether it be a grand opening of a salon or boutique, or a corporate gathering or holiday party, Essence utilizes its resources and relationships with vendors around the Denver area to bring the client’s vision to life.

I would say I’m most known for just being a small part of the Denver community and for my passion to empower business owners and dream makers. There are so many amazing people in this city that I’ve been able to form relationships and friendships with that has resulted in a handful of great opportunities to be a part of.

What sets me apart from other works hand in hand with what I’m most proud of as a company. I value genuine relationships with my clients and vendors. My goal as a business owner is to foster mutually beneficial partnerships with all parties involved as well as build friendships outside of the event itself.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I wouldn’t do anything differently! I walked into entrepreneurship knowing that Essence wasn’t going to explode off the ground in the blink of an eye. I’m thankful for my steady job and I know that in time, with hard work and dedication, good things will come for Essence!
