Meet Tage Plantell of Silver Halide Pictures in Denver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tage Plantell.

Tage, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My name is Tage Plantell. My first name is pronounced (tah-guh)…, I’m of the son of a Swedish immigrant.

I am the founder and creative director at Silver Halide Pictures.

It was from my father that I learned the principals of exposing and composing a camera. He was a professional photographer, whose father was also a photographer and a camera collector.

When I was nine years old, my brother and I made a short film on our Super 8 cameras and we premiered it to my 4th-grade classroom. The other kids loved it. That’s when I realized that creating visual content wasn’t only fun, but it was also something that people really connected with. I was hooked.

Although commercial photography, film production, and broadcast TV are all very similar to each other in many ways, they all have their very specific components that take time, practice, patience and experience to achieve and I wanted to learn it all.

I have a Bachelors degree in film production. However, it wasn’t until after working 12 years behind the camera and eight years in post-production that I felt like I finally had a solid grasp of the subtleties in a wide variety of styles and productions.

In 2014, I was getting burnt out as the senior editor on a weekly network television show… so I quit in favor of doing something new. I decided to focus my efforts on developing my own company where I could take my camera out in the field on a regular basis and engage in all aspects of production.

I took my side project and turned in into my full-time project.

At the end of the day… my goal is to enjoy the work that I do while also taking the time to enjoy my life outside of work. For me, maintaining the work/life balance is key.

While tending to a handful of projects, I’m currently teaming up with Breed of Speed to develop an adventure-travel-motorsports series aimed at the streaming TV platforms.

Has it been a smooth road?
When running a small business, there is always something that needs doing. So in the midst of doing the creative work (which I love), the biggest challenge for me is to force myself to carve out the time for doing the things that aren’t as much fun.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Silver Halide Pictures – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
People ask me, “What is Silver Halide?”

Technically speaking, it’s the essential element in film emulsion that is responsible for making images as a result of the chemical reaction that occurs when exposed to light.

However, for me… it’s much more.

The name Silver Halide Pictures is a nostalgic nod to my early days of shooting film cameras. Before the digital medium became ubiquitous.

SHP is a production company that crafts digital, cinematic quality, high-resolution, visual content for a variety of industries including music, broadcast, commercial, corporate, web, and television.

In recent years, I’ve had the pleasure of working with TNT, AXStv, Ducatti, Pirelli, Michelin, IBEW, McDonalds, Under Armour, Race Across America, Volkswagen, Toyota, NAVY, Harley Davidson, Trek, Sprint, Adidas, Alfa Romeo, Kawasaki, Yonder Mountain String Band, John Butler Trio, Anders Osborn, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Dirty Heads and more.

Every business, every brand… has a message to share and a story to tell.  I really enjoy working with repeat clients as well as developing relationships with new clients where I have the opportunity to help them shape their story into a creative visual experience that will engage their target audience.

I am proud of my company’s ability to create great visual content whether a small-scale or a full-scale approach is required. This flexibility allows me to meet any project’s needs and offer my clients a handful of solutions.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Denver is an amazing place.   It’s well balanced in a lot of ways.  We have the city and the mountains, skiing in the winter and lakes in the summer, hipster art community and plenty to do for outdoorsy people.  We have a thriving sprawl of redevelopment into the outskirts of Denver but, the entire city is getting crowded and the housing prices are skyrocketing.
