Meet Tenia Renee Nelson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tenia Renee Nelson.

Tenia Renee, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It all started with my Auntie giving me her keyboard when I was eleven years old. This was a Godsend because at this time, I wanted to play the piano but my parents did not have enough for lessons. I taught myself piano for a while and then a few years later, I decided to sign myself up for Jazz Band in the 8th grade. Music has always shaped my life. I have been teaching music in Denver(public and private) for over 18 years and playing professionally(piano and percussion) for over 27 years!

Has it been a smooth road?
Being a professional musician can be tough and tiring at times. There are times that I would play a show until 1am in the morning and then wake to get my son ready(I am a momma to Thelonious and a wife to Tim Nelson) for school and then after that, I would work teaching my lovely kiddos….sometimes until 8pm at night. It is a cray life but I would not change it for the world!

Tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I am a professional musician(pianist and percussionist) and educator. I can teach all instruments but my focus is Piano and Percussion. Currently I am teaching at Denver Language School, Neighborhood Music and the Tenia Nelson Studio. I also play all kinds of music as well. So proud that I get to play with TNT, Spherio, Jon Romero y Amanecer, Soul Daddy and Brass and Gold Society. I am proud that I can make people happy with my music. It makes my soul happy when I can do that!

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Denver!! I have been here since 1990 and it is just the best!! I love the fact that if you want to go to the mountains, it only takes you like an hour to get there! Also, Denver is such a musical rich city! And I am blessed to play with an abundance of amazing musicians who call Denver their home. The thing that I do not like about Denver is the traffic and the many unnecessary changes to this beautiful city….it is a hot mess!!
