Today we’re excited to introduce you to Tim and Brownie Richardson. They are cofounders and directors of the nonprofit Hope Advanced and are also a content partner. Check out our conversation with them below.
Tim, it’s been too long since we last connected. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your thoughts with our community again. Some readers might have missed our prior conversations, so maybe you can kick things off for us with a quick intro?
We are Tim and Brownie Richardson. We live in Southern Colorado and have a nonprofit in Colorado Springs, Colorado called Hope Advanced. We work with the broken, busted and disgusted. People who have gone through “life wrecks” and are trying to move forward with their lives. We, at no cost or obligation…for as long as they need us, help them move forward to their best life.
What has happened since you started last year?
We did not stop or slow down because of covid. In March of last year, we leased office space (not knowing the covid shutdown was coming) and we started…NOT stopped. Since March of last year, we have worked successfully with several people and are continuing to develop a network of likeminded people, businesses and other organizations committed to helping people to their best lives. The word Miracle comes to mind in reference to some of those we worked (are working) with. Most importantly we are a conduit for solutions that many of the people are referred to us need. We know we are a part of the solution…NOT the solution but part of it. We believe it takes all who are trying to help…private sector, individuals, churches and government to help people to their best lives.
What have you learned/learning as you go forward?
That the next person we meet…someone we help or someone who is interested in helping others…may be the solution to the next person who is trying to get to their best life. In other words, we never stop meeting people because we need to make sure that we are the best resource possible to get people to their best lives. That doesn’t come from a program or a clipboard interview. It comes from building relationships with people…not just talking but doing.
What about helping with housing?
That is the big one. We are currently working with a group that is working on developing investor based, affordable housing. This is not about transitional, free housing but people as they are employed or have financial wherewithal to pay for affordable housing have new (and in some cases existing homes) to rent and then graduate to ownership. Investors, land owners and developers/builders are currently working together now. I will leave those details to them but Hope Advanced has been asked to be the vetting arm for this endeavor. We will interview those who want to qualify for this type of housing. Currently we are reviewing some veterans for a veteran only home that will be taking tenants soon. We believe this is major component for people getting to their best life…safe, affordable housing that can lead to home ownership.
How are you funded?
Currently we have been self-funded. We just started soliciting donations January of 2021. First of all, we have our nonprofit status as a member of New Horizons Foundation. By going to www.yourhopeadvanced.com you will find out not only about us but how to donate. When you do donate 95% goes directly to Hope Advanced. The donor gets 100% credit for the donation. www.newhorizonsfoundation.com will explain who they are. They represent hundreds of nonprofits. The main reason we are with them is because of their legal and accounting expertise and their ability to help donors with things such as giving stocks, bonds, property etc. as gifts. Currently we have donor giving us computers we need for in house use by our “members” and also so we can give them where needed. Such as the veteran’s home we are vetting tenants for. Through New Horizons he will be tax credit. Normally, nonprofits have trouble or unable to help these kind of donors. Also, our long-term goal is to be supported by “for profit” enterprises. Our first is our thrift store Lightly Used LLC at 1165 N Circle Dr Colorado Springs, Co 80909. As the store becomes profitable it will donate part of its profits to Hope Advanced.
What is the next step(s) on the horizon?
Continued connections with people and organizations who want to help people to their best lives. These continued connections bring the people to us that want our help. And just as important people who want to help. Our focus, has been and shall remain, helping people to their best lives. Our current location at 1157 N Circle Dr Colorado Springs, Co 80909 allows us to have one on one and group meetings. This has been a great asset to our outreach. We are there by appointment and scheduled meetings. Currently we are there most of the week and every Saturday.
