Meet Toby Adams of Do the Bang Thing Salon in South Broadway

Today we’d like to introduce you to Toby Adams.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Toby. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up with a family friend in the beauty industry and owning his own salons, I was alway enamored by the stylists I saw working for him. At a very young age, I saw the fashion, fun, and glamor of being a hair stylist, it seemed awesome.

Fast forward to high school and imagine the surprise on my face when I was walking down a hall in the main building and saw a table of ladies with awesome hair, wearing black smocks, and giggling. Well, what did I know, my high school offered Cosmetology as a vocational program. In two short years, I could attend Cosmetology school part-time and graduate with a license before I even graduate high school.

Fast forward to the present day, add a husband/business partner, two kids, and a salon that not only serves its guests but its community. The story is long and there were a ton of unexpected turns and setbacks. Lots of wine and sobbing, lots of laughing, lots and lots of discoveries, and I wouldn’t change a thing. Well, maybe a couple, but learning to embrace change and really looking in the mirror has helped guide me to where I am today.

Do the Bang Thing Salon was founded in 2011 in my home. My husband, who was in school at the time after serving in the Army, was convinced that we could have a salon in the house. It made sense, with two small kids and a small clientele, the other traditional options seemed difficult. Honestly, I thought it would take years to get to where I could go to a more traditional setting but I had time.

Well, the universe and my husband had other ideas. With his mastery of marketing and advertising and my talent, it was only one and a half years until we moved into a studio suite salon. One year after that, a two-chair suite with our first employee. Our skills complemented one another and even our employee was booked far out within a year. It was time for a bigger space and more team members.

In 2015, just four years later, we were in a 2200 square foot space and really starting to find ourselves. The setbacks I spoke of earlier, well, one year into our five-year lease, we were told that our build was sold and apartments were going to be built. To come so far and put so much blood, sweat, and tears into this place were heartbreaking. Don’t worry this story has a happy ending!

June 2016, we landed on our feet in the heart of South Broadway and we haven’t looked back but we have looked around. Giving back to our community, that has supported us for over eight years now, is very near and dear to us. What is our mission? Confidence!

In June 2018, Do the Bang Thing Salon launch a campaign to empower girls and women to have confidence. So many women grow up feeling that they aren’t good enough, smart enough, pretty enough. Society has put insane pressures on women and girls. Social media consistently shows us how “perfect” others lives are. I have had women sit in my chair and tell me how they hate, that’s right HATE, their face, their body, their hair, even their lives. It’s crushing, it is wrong, and they are all perfect the way they are.

Do the Bang Thing Salon filmed a commercial and partnered with Girls Inc. of Metro Denver to empowering girls to be Strong, Smart, and Bold. A portion of every service is donated to Girls Inc. and has produced over $10,000.00 in donations. We have no plans on slowing down and will continue to support our community. Of course, our guests and team are the real champions because without their support we would not be where we are today. Do Confidence, Do You, Do the Bang Thing!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No path worth taking is easy and boy does that saying hold true. The biggest struggles for myself and business where me growing as a leader, learning to be a boss, not a friend, and having a plan.

A leader is someone who inspires you and guides you. We’ve all heard the saying, “People leave leaders, not businesses.” Boy is that true! I was not a good leader a few years ago. I was fun and thoughtful, I was successful, and I knew how to run a salon. I was not a good leader. I made promises that I didn’t know how I would achieve. I let employees walk all over me. I avoided issues because I didn’t want the argument. “By design, not by chance.” May of 2018 is when that all changed. My husband took me to an amazing business conference I was given a really good look in the mirror and how I was running things, I haven’t looked back since. It changed my life. I can now say, I am a great leader.

A hair salon is a very fun place to be with very fun and different personalities. That was most of the appeal to childhood Toby. I love coming to work, I love laughing and joking, I love people. So, it was really hard for me to not be everyone’s friend. Unfortunately, I have learned that not everyone has your best interest and some people take advantage of you. Again, a look into the mirror and seeing that I can still have fun and laugh with my team. We can still enjoy team building activities and summer salon BBQs, but at the end of the day, I go home. It helps me balance my family and work.

Having a plan is so very important. Do the Bang Thing Salon has had such unexpected growth that every time I thought I was in a place I could plan, we had more things change. However, “if you don’t know your numbers, you don’t know your place,” is entirely a truth. I needed to not only have the skills of managing my team and customer service, but I also needed to know where we wanted to go and how to get there. Hiring a business coach and continuing to take business classes has greatly help me. I feel confident in the decisions we are making as a company and share them transparently.

Do the Bang Thing Salon is an experience of high-quality hair care in a relaxed environment that is supported by an amazing team. We want every guest to leave with a twinkle in their eyes and a spring in their step because they feel confident. We serve anyone, no matter what they identify as, what their sexual preference is, or where they come from. We pride ourselves in modern techniques like Balayage, Beach Wave Perms, and Brazilian Blowouts as well as extensions, hair cutting, hair styling, and another hair coloring. We start with a thorough consultation and end with our Happiness system.

Our involvement with our community through our Veteran’s Day Cut-a-thon (Free haircuts for all veterans and their family members on Veteran’s Day), Girls Inc. of Metro Denver, and other opportunities are how we give back to the Denver we love.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Honestly, every morning I am in the salon and I start our huddle chant, I look around at my team and I know they trust me. I am proud of the trust I have earned.

With that trust, I don’t look at my team as employees because they all have ownership in the salon. I could tell them, “Today, we are all going to wear roller skates and randomly meow!” They would do it, they might give me some looks, but they trust that if I am asking them to do it, I have a reason.

What a feeling on a daily basis to experience and I am so grateful.
