Meet Tom and Lindsay Ludlow of Tend Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tom and Lindsay Ludlow.

Hi Tom and Lindsay, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We’re Tom and Lindsay Ludlow, and we’re partners both in marriage and business. We met in 2008 in Fort Collins when Lindsay was getting her MA from CSU and Tom had recently transferred from CSU to the Art Institute of Colorado to pursue a degree in Visual Effects and Motion Graphics. We hit it off and moved to Denver in 2010 together to begin our careers, Lindsay as a literacy teacher at an international school, and Tom as a freelance motion designer and VJ.

Tom cofounded a motion design event production collective, Ghost Pixel, with some art school friends in 2011, and became the first to projection map the rocks at Red Rocks Amphitheater. He then worked for several Colorado studios and agencies, Motive, Mondo Robot, and Backflip. In 2019, after a layoff, we decided to go into business for ourselves, and Tend Studio was born.

Tend is a motion design & video production studio that creates high-impact cultivated content: 2D & 3D animated ads, compelling videos, and unforgettable experiences. We work with businesses of all sizes, agencies, and universities to create all types of video content.

In 2020, Tend moved from a coworking office to a studio space in Mead, CO where we’re able to spread out and get creative. In 2020-22, we partnered with Fiske Planetarium at CU Boulder to help create a feature-length planetarium film, Forward to the Moon, which recently won best Colorado Dome Short at Horsetooth International Film Fest.

Other notable clients include Left Hand Brewing, Lunar Resources, Origyn Foundation, Sunblink Entertainment, Denver Theater Co, High Plains Bank, Side Stories Rino, and more. Tend is currently at work on projects for two Colorado organizations that we’ve admired for years.

We hope to continue doing what we love, helping our community vividly and vibrantly tell their stories. We can’t wait to share more!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We’ve definitely had our fair share of obstacles and challenges in our three-year history, chiefly due to the pandemic. When the covid shut down many businesses in 2020, we had been in operation for about 10 months. We lost many projects overnight, which really slowed our momentum as a new business.

Since founding Tend, we’ve relied heavily on a freelance/ remote workforce, but 2020 and beyond really put our remote skills to the test. We produced a fair amount of virtual events and always went out of our way to film videos in distanced/ outdoor/ as safe as possible ways.

In addition to our pandemic-related challenges, we’ve had to learn on the fly a lot about the business of running a motion design studio. We learned a lot from a business coach who helped us learn how to productize and price our services effectively.

Working together as a couple has had its share of teachable moments, too. But overall we feel that we’re getting really good at collaborating and bringing out the best in one another to create work we’re really proud of.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a motion design & video production studio aimed at creating high-impact cultivated content: 2D & 3D animated ads, compelling videos, and unforgettable experiences. We specialize in unique video formats such as projection mapping, VR, and AR as well.

We pride ourselves in our beautiful videos and our organized and collaborative production process. We work with clients from all walks, small business owners making their very first video, agencies looking for a long-term video partner, and university planetariums looking to tell the story of the next mission to the moon.

We work with a remote freelance team, so each project we complete consists of a team of experts in that skill set. One project may require beautiful cinematography, while the next needs a 3D character modeler and animator. We assemble and manage the perfect team for your specific project needs. A video is a quintessential form of media these days, and at Tend, we love bringing stories to life.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
If you’re interested in working with Tend, we’d love to connect! On our website, you can learn more about our services, contact us, set up a meeting, and even get an instant quote estimate on your project. Video projects often take longer than many people expect (generally a few months) so we recommend contacting us sooner than later.

We’re also proud to share our planetarium film, FORWARD! To the Moon is screening at over 70 planetariums worldwide, including Fiske Planetarium in Boulder and Otterbox Planetarium in Fort Collins. Go check it out!
