Today we’d like to introduce you to Bren Husher.
Bren, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As long as I can remember, I’ve been creative with everything I did from my hobbies and even in school. I wasn’t particularly bad in school, just more of a hands on learner. I didn’t have many friends and was not popular by any means. It seemed the only time I got any positive feedback from my classmates was for arts or something creative.
I was good with anything that I could do with my hands and excelled at it. In middle school, I found more friends that were creative like myself. My group of friends were the “alternative” crowd. Think colored hair, big eyeliner, listening to loud music and dressing quite differently. I was comfortable around them and felt more like myself. This is when I started to really get into makeup and how it could change your appearance.
In my early twenties, I started becoming attracted to the beauty industry. I quickly signed-up for an esthetician course at my local cosmetology School which was amazingly fun and I got licensed! While I was in the class there was a permanent Makeup instructor across the street who was looking for eyebrow models, so I signed-up. While there as a model I was quickly attracted to the business and became a student of hers! I loved it and was great at it! I realized this was my passion to help people attain effortless beauty. The “I woke up this way” beauty. Women don’t have to draw on or fill in brows anymore, and tinted lips that require no lipstick!
So being a new esthetician and certified permanent makeup technician, I had all these ideas but very few resources and I really only wanted to do permanent makeup. 17 years ago, social media was in its infant stage, not as widespread as it is today. That, and permanent makeup was kinda risky and not very many Salons wanted it on their service menu! I was having trouble finding a place to fit in, so I rented my own space at a local waxing salon. That was hard, I did not know how to market myself. While I had a few clients, they were few and far between and I wasn’t making rent so I had to shut down my tiny room of wonders for the time being.
I was discouraged about the whole thing and needed to bury my head for a while, So I started bartending! The money was great and I liked it. So I bartended for a while but it was never my passion, always wishing that I could do what I really wanted. I kept doing Permanent makeup for friends and family but was not fulfilled. I became burned out and bummed that I was getting older and felt like I had wasted my talents. So I thought to myself I know I can do better with my life and for myself, So I renewed my esthetics license and took another permanent makeup certification course. I was, however, terrified to change careers at this point and was worried about income. But I put all the faith I had into it along with my saving account and I jumped off that bridge!
I quickly scored a spot at a local salon with no problem! I started getting more clients than I ever did before. This was fantastic and I took an eyelash extension course to bring in repeat clients! Now growing out of my two days-a-week at the salon, I thought I need more space and available times to see clients! Using all of the lessons I had learned from before, I am now once again opening my own clinic with a business partner whom is amazing at the stuff I’m not good at. She has a real talent with computers and writing and editing videos! I love her enthusiasm and readiness to help out!! I think we will make a truly great team.
Our new location opens March 1st in Aurora, Colorado! I couldn’t be more pleased!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This journey has definitely not been smooth. I think the biggest challenge has been in my own mind. The fear of failure! Taking the chance once before and failing has been a huge setback! It created constant self-doubt which became crippling and completely immobilizing. But I knew it was important to keep going if its something you feel so passionate about and want to do! None of this has been easy and I feel like I still have some healing to get me to where I want to be. But doing what I love and getting positive feedback has been instrumental in my forward progress and keeping my spirits high.
We’d love to hear more about Painted Lady Pigments.
I am a double certified permanent makeup artist and have been practicing for 17 years, I call my business “Painted Lady Pigments.” I love makeup and how it can enhance our natural beauty! However, I do not like to have to apply it daily. I prefer the “I woke up beautiful look” which is a more fresh and natural look. I do not like to have to draw my brows on and try to make them match daily, I do not like to mess around with lipsticks, I also hate coating black mascara on my lashes for definition and I think most anyone would agree. So permanent make up is where I come into play. My favorite thing to do is called a “Powder Brow” also known as “microshading.” This technique can be used on all skin types and creates a soft pixelated look simulating the appearance of a soft powder filled brow. Microshading can also be used on the lips, I call this “lip Blush” which is a permanent lip tint that provides a natural looking tint of color for that “just bitten look”. Another cool thing I’m doing is called “freckling.” This is semi-permanent freckles on the face. They look super fresh! I also offer eyelash extensions to complete the fresh face look. These last for up to 3 weeks and change the makeup game. Since I have started wearing them myself I barely use conventional makeup at all!
I love to create brows, lips and lashes on others and share this joy of freedom from daily makeup applications which has absolutely changed my world. I would like to extend a thank you to the readers of this and offer 20% off to new clients on their first service by mentioning this article for a limited time!
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
I think the greatest barrier to female leadership is the male-driven society we live in and I think many women do not feel like they are “enough.” As women, we also tend to over criticize and belittle other women instead of helping them aspire to improve. I do feel like we are in a transition period and women are becoming more powerful and influential every day. So a big barrier is more women need to step up and take that role and start influencing other women . We need to be the women who roots for the other girl, and encourage more women to believe in themselves and their dreams! Let’s push that snowball down the hill!
