Today we’d like to introduce you to Candice Baker.
Candice, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I found a love for photography at a young age. I wanted to photograph everything. You could always find me with a disposable camera in hand. I have a bin filled with photographs from my life. I wanted to remember every moment, relive it. The good, the bad, the silly, the hard times, the fun times, the sad times. I never wanted to forget.
All through high school, I took photography classes. You pretty much could always find me in the darkroom developing prints in my free time.
I studied at the Art Institute of Schaumburg in IL and fell even more in love with photography. In 2014, I decided I wanted to open my own business and follow my heart by helping families make memories they could cherish forever.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No road to success is ever smooth and easy. There were times I was unsure if this was where I was supposed to be and then, I would keep pushing. Pushing past the comparison of where I was versus where the artist I adored were. And you can’t do that because they are not at the same place in their journey that you are. I think everyone struggles at moments especially with this, and especially in this field.
It’s so important to follow your journey. Always shoot from the heart, and always shoot with intent.
I learned over time to always shoot for feelings. You’re telling someone else’s story so it’s important to be connected to it. Shoot for the moments, especially in between moments where no one thinks you are watching.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I love working with families. The story of a family is always growing and evolving. Relationships between one another are so important. The bonding that happens over time is something worth documenting, as children grow older each and every day.
I really strive to tell a story, most importantly, my client’s story. I want to not only capture them right now at this moment, but I want to capture them the way they truly are. Raw, unfiltered. Children aren’t meant to sit still. They run, explore and come back for snuggles because they feel safe in their parent’s arms. I want to leave my clients all with a little piece of art from my eyes and made of their family.
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Push, always push for what you want. Work from the heart, provide work that makes you feel.
