Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Iverson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Chelsea. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My photography story started three years ago after the birth of my daughter Ava. After she was born, I found myself taking endless amounts of photos, documenting how quickly she was growing and changing. I began researching and teaching myself how to get the images I desired most. I took a financial “leap of faith” and upgraded my camera equipment and purchased an editing program! Many of my friends and family had children and some were soon expecting, so I decided to offer them my services and the business took off from there. I love taking photos. I love editing my work, and nothing brings me greater joy than giving my clients photos that they will adore and treasure for a lifetime. Photography is my passion in life. It’s what makes me happy. I’ve spent countless hours reading articles, watching videos and teaching myself the techniques of the trade. My business grew into what it is today simply by word-of-mouth and continuing to do it because it brings me joy.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been a smooth road for the most part! I think no matter what type of business you start there is much to learn and there is always so much growing to do. Of course, there will be obstacles to overcome and things you need to improve on. You can’t beat yourself up about the mistakes you will make. Instead, you must strive to make yourself better and let yourself grow. Everything good takes time. If what you’re doing makes you happy, then work at it! And don’t compare yourself to others. Don’t be afraid to reach out to people you admire and ask for their help, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find there is such a big community of people waiting to help you! And rooting for you to succeed!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about CMI Photography – what should we know?
When I first began exploring photography, I was told by many photographers that I needed to specialize and focus on one area only. But that is not me, nor is it my style! I love working with a large variety of clients, and I love a challenge! I offer family photography, Headshots, Personal Branding sessions and everything in between. Basically… if you need it done, I’m your girl!! I love meeting people and hearing their stories! I love working with other businesses and capturing what they stand for and what they offer to others. I think that sets me apart in this industry.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
In the beginning, I think it’s so important to put yourself out there! Go to events where you can meet like-minded people. Don’t be afraid to ask tons of questions! Practice, practice and then practice some more! Everybody has to start somewhere. And if somebody’s work inspires you, let them know it! They once were in your shoes too!
