Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Younkin.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Erica. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve been studying and working in marketing since I was 16 (8 if you count years helping my Dad place labels on his company’s printed newsletter). As a consultant, I’ve always enjoyed working with other businesses and helping them reach more targeted customers. At the same time, I felt like I wanted to have the experience of creating a business that was completely new. Starting Match Me Cards® was the answer to that, and it’s something that I wanted as a consumer—online dating shouldn’t be the only way to meet someone. So, it felt like the perfect business for me to go all-in on right now.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been fairly smooth since my experience working with other companies helped me know what I didn’t want to do. (I didn’t want to start a business that had a complex supply chain or inventory.) COVID-19 has been the biggest challenge. We were going to launch just when the pandemic started, but we decided to wait. I wasn’t convinced we had a clear path forward in a time of social distancing… and not being able to physically touch. Waiting was key. It made us think about our product in a new way. So, we pivoted by adding a digital image card that can be safely sent via text or email (in addition to the printed cards). Then we got involved in the conversation about how to date right now, and that feels like a good lane for us.
For other women starting the journey, I would encourage them to see value in everything you learn and do along the path. There will be setbacks and frustrations, but really it’s all just a great education on getting to where you want to go.
We’d love to hear more about Match Me Cards®.
Match Me Cards® (www.matchmecards.com) is a totally new dating tool with an offline approach: personalized printed cards + digital image card for the purpose of matchmaking.
How it works: First, you get to create your own custom card. It’s just one image and four questions that you choose. No more lengthy profiles. Then you give your cards to friends and trusted acquaintances to enlist their help in connecting you to matches. You can also give your card directly to someone you’d like to date—if you feel confident enough to give them your card, we say go for it!
Match Me Cards® was motivated by a desire to change today’s dating culture, a belief that romantic connections are better made offline, and a drive to create a tool that empowers people in their dating lives.
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
I feel very lucky to have spent my K-12 years in a school system that encouraged my creativity and interests. For me, it felt like a very personalized experience. It also made me think early on about strengths and weaknesses (math!), and where I might want to focus my attention in college and beyond. My family also played a huge role. We have a lot of business owners across multiple generations (both women and men), so I have many entrepreneurs to look up to, observe, and call for advice.
