Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Liu.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jamie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a high school student at Fairview High School as a junior. I got started when I saw an ad for Barbizon modeling school and wanted to try it out. I ended up taking the classes and it actually taught me a lot about modeling and the industry. From there, I took a break from modeling to focus on school. In the last year, I have become interested in it again and got to do such amazing things like working with many photographers, walking in New York Fashion Week and Denver Fashion Week. I recently walked my second Denver Fashion Week and I could not be more excited about where my future is heading. I started off really slow, but starting a blog actually has helped me become braver and able to try more things. I got to where I am from the support of my family and friends pushing me to be the best that I can and to push the limits of everyday life. I could not have gotten to where I am today without the support and believing in myself and what I know I can accomplish.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As I always say, if you don’t have struggles along the way, you are not improving. It certainly has not been a smooth road for me through my journey in the modeling industry. This industry is very harsh and strict. Some struggles that I have had are not being tall enough as I am only 5’7″, only hitting the bare minimum, as well as not having enough time for the things I want to do. Since I am still in high school, time management is key in getting everything done and finding that balance has been a struggle for a long time. I am still working on it now because new things always come up and things change.
My advice in starting your journey would be to go for it. You have to have the confidence in yourself to throw yourself out in the world and not let anything stop you. I had to take a chance in my first fashion show because I didn’t know if I was good enough, but I had to go for it and it opened up a whole new world for me. My second piece of advice is you have to put your whole heart and soul into it if you want to get something out of it. Everything is a learning experience and if you don’t put everything you have into it, you are not going to get the results you want. With those two pieces of advice, you will be in a positive mindset to go out there and start your journey.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a model and I do runway as well as print. I am most proud of what I have been able to accomplish as a shorter model and all of the things that I have been able to do. Walking in two shows in New York Fashion Week has definitely been a highlight of my career so far. Since modeling is mostly how someone looks, I would say that since I am Asian, my face shape and eyes set me apart from many other models. I would also say my personality because I love having fun and dancing around all of the time. I also love meeting new people and learning about their lives and stories.
Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
To help me do my best in my everyday life, I love listening to hyped up music such as Louis the Child and Big Wild. I also love listening to the podcast called Pretty Basic on Spotify. It is about two YouTubers who talk about their lives and everyday struggles. It is really relaxing to listen to and many of these problems I go through as well, so them breaking it down helps me focus on other issues.
