Today we’d like to introduce you to Jen Metcalf.
Jen, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have an extensive background in fitness including a Bachelors’s in Exercise science, as well as a Master’s in Physical therapy.
I worked as a Personal trainer, and Pilates instructor in Miami, Fl before moving to Aspen, CO in 2008 to complete a Physical Therapy internship.
I also own Flex Pilates Aspen, a boutique Pilates studio in downtown Aspen, Colorado specializing in Pilates Reformer classes, and one on one private Pilates sessions. I think Pilates is an amazing workout but was looking to offer something a little more challenging, intense, and athletic to my clients. Which is what lead me to open Ritual Aspen, a studio in downtown (across from Flex!) Aspen specializing in the Lagree Method.
I opened Ritual Aspen a Lagree Method studio in Feb 2019 and we are the only licensed Lagree studio in Aspen.
I was introduced to the Lagree Method while living in Miami, and have never found a workout quite like it! As a physical therapist, I think it’s a great way to get an intense workout, that is also very low impact on joints.
The Lagree Method is an exercise method designed by fitness guru Sebastien Lagree in Los Angelos, which involves performing slow, laser-focused movements for 1-2 minute intervals on a patented, spring-loaded machine called the Megaformer. Many people refer to it as “high-intensity Pilates’, and however it may be related to Pilates, it’s a much more intense workout as the goal is to bring muscles to complete failure!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’m a wife, mother, business owner and things get busy. There are challenges, and risks associated with opening a business. I think you have to ask yourself, ‘what is your goal with your business?” Having a passion for what you do, and strong belief and love for what you offer is so important!
As a new business in a small town, things started slow. Our goal is to stay true to our brand and offer amazing workouts that are effective, challenging and safe so you’re strengthening your body, not breaking it down. We’re pleased the community is starting to get to know our brand, and our studio is getting busier so we encourage clients to book ahead of time!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Ritual Aspen – what should we know?
I own 2 fitness studios in downtown Aspen which I’ve built from the ground up. I’m not a chain and have no investors. Just 2 locally owned businesses! I’ve worked really hard, and take pride in the quality instruction, and awesome product that I offer at both businesses. I’m also so lucky to have an amazing team of instructors teaching classes at Ritual!
I’ve been teaching Pilates for years, and after working at numerous studios was so proud to open my own studio Flex in 2015 which specializes in athletic Reformer workouts.
I took Lagree in Miami many years ago and never found anything quite like it. It was one of the most challenging workouts I’d ever done, but very low impact. I think it’s an amazing way to get fit, and not break down your body.
I teach Lagree at Ritual (which I opened in Feb. 2019), as well as an amazing Hot Pilates Mat class in our infrared fitness studio at Ritual that fuses Pilates Mat with strength training, and bursts of HIIT.
Our brand at Ritual is no-frills, and very much workout focused. Great workout, +amazing instructors, +great playlists that’s what we’re all about! Every class on our schedule is designed to be efficient, effective, and challenging, many of which are 45 minutes. We know clients are eager to get outside and enjoy the outdoors. Our goal is to get them strong for all the outdoor sports Aspen has to offer without breaking them down!
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
I think it’s really challenging as a female in any industry to balance work with home. In order to be successful, I think you’ve got to pour your heart and soul into your work, but find a balance where there is still time and energy left to spend with your family. It’s a balance I’m constantly working on! I opened my businesses when my kids were 2 and 3, it was pretty hectic, but I made it work!
