Meet Trailblazer Jessie Lessard

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessie Lessard.

Jessie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It all began at the age of eight. I was a girl with a plan and I was sticking to it. I always knew I not only wanted to be a hairstylist but a salon owner as well. So, the plan was to get a scholarship for softball in college, major in business management and finish by going to cosmetology school.

To get myself through cosmetology school, I worked full time serving tables which ended up benefiting my business in more ways than one. The connections I made and people I met, soon became my clients while I was in school which then allowed me to graduate from cosmetology school and go straight to booth renting. It was pretty scary at first being on my own but I’m that kind of person that has big goals and won’t let anyone else get in the way of it!! Within the first two years of my career, I had moved Salons a couple of times and finally found Sola Salons as my new home. I’ve been there for five years and have grown my business immensely!!

The last year and a half, I have completely re-vamped my business in a whole new direction. I was becoming the stylist that says “YES” to every client and I began to get burnt out. It wasn’t until I found a program called BMS (Big Money Stylist) and NBR (Natural Beaded Rows) that totally helped shift my career in the direction I had always hoped for. They taught me marketing, life skills, business building and so much more. I’ve been striving to be a Hair Extension Exclusive Salon the last year and a half and I am so very close to being right where I want to be. Hair Extensions and Custom Color are what I’m most passionate about and I can’t even begin to tell you how this specialty has changed these women’s lives! It justifies what I do for a living to a whole other level!!!

Just a little back story on how I came up with my business name: when I was a little girl, my grandma always has the best hair and coolest fashion!! She inspired me so much that it made me realize I wanted to be a hairstylist when I grew up. With a heavy heart, she has since passed so I knew I wanted to have her name or her resembled in my salon name somehow. So, that’s where the “Angelic” came from because I believe she’s an angel and is with me every day!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s all about perspective on how you view the career and path that has led you to where you are today. I have definitely had some bumps in the road but for the right reasons that directed me to where I am supposed to be. Yeah, the first couple of salons I went to wasn’t super great but it taught me so much about how and not to run a salon or how to be professional with your clients and employees.

One thing I’ve always done is to ask for feedback from my clients on their experience and what kind of atmosphere they like best so I can accommodate them.

The best piece of information I have learned, especially this last year is to market the heck out of yourself! People want to know your work, lifestyle and just the real YOU! Using our social media platforms are our best tools and that is the fastest way you will build your clientele. If you’re going to do it, do it 100% effort and not half-assed.

The last piece of information I have is, to never say “I”m sorry” for inconveniencing them or taking too long to respond. We are all human trying to make it in this hectic world. If you say “I’m sorry” I feel like that gives our clients leverage to take advantage. I’m not perfect and still let it slip but it has given me the power to be in control and not the client.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Angelic Bliss Boutique Salon Services – what should we know?
I specialize in Beaded Row – Handtied Hair Extensions, Custom Color, and balayage. The methods I use are Meraki and NBR. The Handtied Hair I use is from an amazing company called Harper and Ellis Hair Co. started by my good friend Terra Earls. What makes hand-tied hair so valuable is that the wefts are so thin, you can stack up to 6 pieces on each row and they lay extremely flat to the scalp. They also give a maximum amount of fullness with minimal points of contact which makes the Beaded Row method the least damaging extension method out there!

Each weft is custom colored to the client’s hair and root smudged to make it extremely undetectable when the hair moves. The ponytails, braids and fun hairstyles you can create are endless!!

I am most proud of the brand I have created for myself, purple has always been my signature color with big white angel wings. People know the brand as soon as they see it!

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
I feel the biggest barriers today in female leadership is not supporting fellow females that are strong-minded and independent women. I think women can feel threatened by that so we don’t want to back them. I think we let our insecurities get the best of us and become judgmental as opposed to supporting and encouraging one another. Let’s all rise up together and make major shifts in this world!
