Meet Trailblazer Kailina Erickson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kailina Erickson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kailina. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always had a passion for film!
When I was little, I remember constantly filming everything I could with a camcorder, more than I ever took a single picture.

After high school, I attended the Academy of Art University for film and motion picture with every attention of becoming a music video director but life had other plans for me and honestly, I am so grateful that it did.

I ended up filming a wedding for a friend and creating them a video and that actually led to another couple contacting me t0 film there wedding, which then led to another and before I knew it, I had I had a handful of wedding booked to film for the upcoming summer.

So, I took a leap of faith, and I quit my current job at the time and began my own videography business; Roots and Wings Productions.

This new adventure of mine took off faster than I could have ever imagined it would before I knew it, my passion had turned into a full-time business and here I am, three and half years later.

I am so beyond grateful to everyone who has supported me, especially each and every client I have had along the way.

I am literally living my dream, I get paid to film!

I get paid to capture moments as they happen and tell a story through video clips and every day I get to do that, I consider it a blessing.

Has it been a smooth road?
I would love to sit here and tell you how it has been a huge journey to get to where I am but honestly it has simply all fallen right into place right before my eyes.

I truly believe that God closed one door for me and he didn’t just crack open a new one, he blasted that door WIDE OPEN.

Now, do not take that the wrong way, it hasn’t been an overnight success, there have been so so many steps, all behind the scenes that people don’t see.

There have been multiple trial and error moments as well as investments, and experiences that I have learned and developed from.

All over time, I have figured out what truly works best for me, for my business, and for my clients.
I cannot wait to keep learning and keep advancing in this business as time continues on.

My advice? If you have a passion, follow it!
Find something you truly love to do.
Take a good long at yourself and what you love to do as a hobby or in your extra time.
Then, put it in God’s hands but at that same time, to be blunt work your butt off to make it happen.
Do not give up, stay committed to your dreams.
I remember reading that dreams don’t come true unless you have the persistence to make them happen and that is something I never let myself forget.
So, set goals, work on your passions and you will truly find your hearts calling.

We’d love to hear more about Roots and Wings Productions.
Roots and Wings Productions specializes in creating wedding films that allow you to relive the moments of your wedding day through video.

I personally strive in connecting with each and every one of my couples and not only in filming there wedding day but capturing there love story that comes alongside it.

Whether it is the vows or letters that they have written to each other or it is just the way they look at one another throughout the day, there is a story there and it’s my personal goal to capture it.

Every couple has a unique story and details that are unique to there day and I love showcasing that.
I pride myself in the fact that while my client(s) can request a second shooter for there event, I have learned how to successfully solo shoot most events.

I love that my couples have the opportunity to hear from me directly upon reaching out, have a consultation with me, as well as work with me on their wedding day.

It is a wonderful experience to truly get to know them.

I absolutely love meeting new people and using my talent to create a film that allows them as well as there family and friends to relive this special time in their life.

I am so thankful for every couple that has trusted me with capturing this day.

Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
While personally my own individual schooling and experience in itself has been my best mentor, I highly recommend anyone looking for a mentor consider assisting someone you admire, for example, if there is a photographer or videographer you admire, you can offer to assist by carrying equipment, helping with lighting, and just, in general, seeing what is like behind the scenes.

Once you feel you have the proper experience and knowledge, you can also get involved in second shooting for other photographers and videographers.

Be sure to network with other vendors, stay in touch, support there work, and collaborating with them, on events such as styled shoots where you can really practice, is another great way as well.
