Meet Trailblazer Leanne Jewell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leanne Jewell.

Leanne, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My path has taken an interesting turn over the past two years. I have been in the wedding and special events industry for just over 24 years, and I am a wedding planner and the owner of Jewell Event Design, a wedding planning and design company. However, two years ago I started a new journey that led me to begin The Giggling Guinea Pig®, which is my new passion. Under my brand, I am now a motivational speaker leading seminars and workshops. I speak at conferences and live events and have a number of topics that I work under from being mindful and present, mindful networking, living your best life, loving yourself and your life, finding joy, getting through difficult times and more. I recently did a TEDx talk on “Improv-ing” Your Life, which was about learning to be present at the moment to change your life and relationships. Two years ago, my life took some interesting turns and while I was going through some difficult times, The Giggling Guinea Pig was born and came about as a series of things that ended up being a metaphor for my life. My mission is to help empower everyone to live their best and most joyful lives by finding their true purpose and passion. I want to help guide people through difficult times, clear blocks that hold us back and rewrite the untrue stories that we tell ourselves.

I have gone through quite a journey to get me to this point in my life and The Giggling Guinea Pig took on a new and very profound meaning. It really means something to me in that I feel my journey through this life and the things that I have been through and experienced so far have all led me to this place of being in love with my life and wanting to share the lessons that I’ve learned. I have, in a sense, been the guinea pig learning through experiences and figuring how to get through difficult times and come through it all with a smile on my face and joy in my heart! And a hell of a lot of jokes! Laughing is key.

In my lifetime, I have gone through some pretty difficult times (sexual abuse, tragedy, and death; eight different surgeries and a myriad of health issues; BII; three marriages (which led to three divorces and those, in and of themselves, are experiences); heartbreak and devastation; an eating disorder and body image issues; and loss of my last chance at a baby after spending two years trying to bring him into this world. My experiences in those times have led me to a life of helping others get through things that often leave people feeling depressed and hopeless. I have done the work through trial and error throughout my experiences. I know what works to fully manifest a beautiful life and find joy in every moment… even during your darkest times.

In addition, I’m a professional actor and comedian. I have trained for years in all forms of improvisation and acting. I have used the lessons that I learned in improv to help navigate my life and I’m so passionate about it that it led to my recent experience as a TEDx speaker.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have encountered struggles and difficulties in my entire life. What has been a huge blessing is finally getting to the place in my life where I realized that I was extremely grateful for the hard times and difficulties because they shaped me into who I am in now. And I LOVE who I am now! Realizing that my journey and experiences, even the tough ones, led me to truly find myself and get to a place where I am truly happy and have, in a sense, awakened to my life and who I am is the biggest blessing. Realizing that the Universe is on your side and trusting that there is a plan for you is an incredible thing. I am truly blessed.

My advice for all women, particularly young women is to HAVE FUN and ENJOY the journey. We worry about too many things instead of focusing on living in the moment and finding the joy and fun in day to day moments and living. Being mindful changes our focus. Be grateful for everything. Everyday. Love yourself. Love everyone. Even the ones you think you can’t. Forgive others. Carrying anger and resentment through your life is wasted baggage and wasted space in your life. Trust the journey. Stress less. One thing that has helped me center myself and work through the difficult times is meditation. I believe mediation helped me find myself and feel connected to everything around me. Surround yourself with people that uplift you. And never give up. And did I mention, love yourself? That is the most important thing.

Tell us about your work, what do you do, what are you proud of, what are you known for.
I am most proud of doing the work to release the things that weren’t serving me, and living how I want to live and be in the world.

I am beyond proud of my recent TEDx talk and the path that led me to put myself out there. It was such a huge, wonderful experience and I can’t wait to share my story with others.

I was also a celebrity dancer with Dancing with Boulder Stars this past October and what an incredible and uplifting experience! I am so proud of putting myself out there and doing something that was somewhat scary for me. My dance partner and I decided to do a dance that was all about empowering women and lifting each other up. I even had 8 of my closest friends and members of the Boulder Leading Ladies (a networking group of young professionals) in our dance, which was extremely moving and made for a beautiful and inspiring ending.

I am known for being engaging and funny, having a light spirit and occasionally being super inappropriate (sorry, mom).

I am also known for being a hard worker and a really good wedding planner. 🙂

My talks are very well received. I incorporate improv into all of my talks and firmly believe in speaking from the heart, so while I have outlines for my talks, I am always passionate about my topics, well studied in them, and believe in being present and in the moment. Meaning, I don’t do memorized talks. This has served me so well. Trusting myself has been such a big gift. The result? Connection and fun.

My experiences have led me to a life of helping others get through things that often leave people feeling depressed and hopeless. I have done the work through trial and error throughout my experiences. I know what works to fully manifest a beautiful life and find joy in every moment… even during your darkest times. As a professional actor and comedian, I have trained for years in all forms of improvisation and acting. I can teach people skills that incorporate improv practices into their daily life to change their confidence, frequency, and vibration in the world. I also have an associates degree in Natural Health & Holistic Nutrition and have studied many forms of different therapies and ways of eating. I am a certified spirit reiki practitioner and a certified yin yoga teacher. I am the Owner & CEO of Jewell Event Design, which is a wedding and event planning company that I built from the ground-up.

I am a people person. I love seeing others succeed and believe supporting and lifting others up is what lifts us all up.

Above all else, I love making people laugh.

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well-positioned for?
I believe that women are well-positioned for any opportunity that they want! I believe that a lot of women, in particular, don’t believe in themselves, love themselves and are too quick to make themselves the last priority. I was once that woman. I used to put everyone else’s needs above mine. And our self-talk can be atrocious.
Whether that is because of what see in the media, or what we grew up with, those stories that we have carried with us are straight crap (pardon my atrocious language) and don’t have a place in our lives. If more women would focus inward and release the guilt that grabs ahold of us when we “think” we are being selfish, then more women would be thriving. I do believe there is a wonderful and strong movement to empower women and be supportive of each other and that is such a blessing. Who would you be if you removed the untrue stories you’ve come to believe about yourself? Now take that and build up the other women in your lives that might be suffering from the same untruths about themselves.

We are all incredible and worthy of everything this amazing life has to offer! More of us need to do the work to believe that. The amazing thing about the world today is that women really can have an opportunity that they wish to have. It’s all about mindset, believing in yourself (no matter what), knowing you are worthy and changing your perspective.
