Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcella Domonkos.
Marcella, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my design business when my son was two. I had a couple of friends who fiercely were in my corner and told me to just go for it already!
I have always had a flair for design and décor. I can remember as a little girl building Lego houses. I would take cardboard and make miniature furniture, paper mache floral arrangements for the Lego houses. I would gather the family and they patiently listened to my explanations for my latest creations.
It came naturally but I didn’t listen to that when it was time to figure out what I would major in or what my career would look like.
I grew up in Ventura, CA and went to college in Bozeman, MT. I met my husband in Bozeman and was working in retail. I loved what I was doing and decided retail management was the path I wanted to continue on. We bounced back and forth from Bozeman to Denver a couple of times to follow my husband’s career. I was able to transfer with retail as well.
When my son was born and we moved again to Denver for the second time, I decided I wanted to try the stay at home mom thing and watch my babies.
We bought a home and started to dive into renovations. I was obsessed and wanted to keep it going. I knew eventually I would have to go back to work but the thought of retail no longer appealed to me. Being a stay at home mom I was able to see clearly that I was missing something in retail that I found in design.
I started helping friends and neighbors in my area with their home projects. It clicked! I needed this to be part of my world, my everyday life. Design was where I felt alive.
As a stay at home mom, I was able to start slow and get all my ducks in a row to make this dream a reality.
I was fortunate enough to have a dear friend who’s husband had a growing building company. www.apexhomesdenver.com They took a chance on me and I helped design the interior of one of their new builds. I have been working with them ever since.
MD Design was born. I have so much more to learn, everyday I am truly grateful for all the people who have been in my corner rooting me on. When I didn’t believe I could do it, they all reassured me, offered advice and consistently asked how it was going.
I can honestly say that at this moment, today, I am living my little dream.
Has it been a smooth road?
With every new business, there will be kinks and issues. It almost feels like you’re faking it for a while and then eventually if all works.
You have to grow with it.
Starting a business is hard but allowing yourself grace along the way is key. Creating mini deadlines and just achieving one thing a week towards your ultimate goal is what will get you closer to making it happen.
I continue to work on “letting go.” You can’t be perfect in every aspect of your life 100% of the time and when you start that new business sometimes other parts of your life fall on the back burner. Allowing yourself grace and being ok with letting some of it go will save your sanity.
I tend to stress out when I have a deadline fast approaching and in design not every day is a day I find inspiration. Letting go for me is vital so I have space to create for my new client.
We’d love to hear more about MD Design.
I am a design consultant for builders and homeowners. I work with homeowners building their dream home top to bottom and directly with a builder to choose all the permanent fixtures for new builds. That is tile, light fixtures, flooring, plumbing, appliances, paint, trims, mirrors, cabinets and more. I love working with home owners who need smaller projects done as well. Such as kitchen, bath, and basement remodels. I have worked with a woman who needed a new vibe in her business offices, a couple who wanted an overhaul done on the furniture, paint, and flooring for their entire home and I have worked with clients who just need help going through all of their mismatched décor and pinpointing their style.
My favorite would have to be a full kitchen remodel or bathroom.
Working on an entire home from the beginning is a dream. The process from first consult to mood boards and watching the clients reaction is the best. Creating a new space they are excited to live in is the ultimate goal.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well-positioned for?
I believe as a woman, we can be well positioned for any job as long as we have proper training. We for sure have many challenges still but we have progress as well. As long as woman keep standing up and rooting each other on we will keep making waves.
I love that as a woman, I not only get to experience the immense bond and love that comes from having a child but I also get to have a career. We can do both. We are getting more support, longer maternity leaves, childcare onsite, nursing spaces that aren’t just a closet or bathroom. Yuck! Some companies let you bring your babies to work. I hope all of these benefits just becomes the standard for all companies not just a select few.
A career and the mom gig is not an easy one and as a woman, sometimes there is so much pressure that you must do it all. It is ok to not know what you want or how it will all play out. Some years, you can’t bear to do it all and others it feels like it all just clicks.
I think one of the best opportunities we have in this country is we get to choose! Choose our own path, have a voice and slay at whatever it is we are doing. Even if that diapers and feeding 24/7 or if it’s a corporate job!
Woman rock! I am constantly in awe of us as humans and really find so much inspiration from watching others handle themselves as moms and in careers.
