Meet Trailblazer Megan DeQuiroz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan DeQuiroz.

Megan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a beauty, fashion, and lifestyle micro-influencer, and I started out in high school on YouTube making makeup tutorials, Get Ready With Me videos, and other tag videos! Five years ago, the content creation path was the “weird” thing to do for sure. A lot of kids really made fun of what I was doing, and here it is as its own industry. As I’ve grown up these last five years, I think my audience has grown and changed with me. I have less a year left of undergrad, and I’ve started to gear my content towards things currently going on in my life! I also used to do a lot of sponsored content, but I think now more than ever I’ve seen how much better it is to be authentic and to still purchase things with your own money!

I also do freelance work in social media, content creation, and photography as more of a full-time job!

Has it been a smooth road?
I think the main struggle was when I was starting out, was that I received a lot of criticism. It is not easy doing something you love and enjoy, while everyone else makes fun of you. High school kids can be so cruel. My advice for anyone starting something, whether it is blogging, or maybe a hobby, do not let what anyone else says get in the way of you pursuing something you love! Life is WAY to short to only do things based on feedback and support of others, and sometimes, the best ideas might not have any backing from those around you! My second tip would be to also have a thick skin. It is so easy to get caught up in hate comments, or negative feedback, especially if you’re creating with an audience in mind. Take these with a grain of salt, and if you can’t handle it – disable the comments, or don’t allow yourself to get in that position! Lastly, quality is the key to success. Quality in content, in execution, whatever you are putting out in the world. Your name is on what you are creating, and the quality of it says a lot about you as a person!

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I originally started as a Youtuber about five years ago! I loved creating makeup, fashion, hair videos, but it wasn’t until recently that I think I really found my niche. Now, I brand myself as a blogger of all things beauty, fashion, & lifestyle related to an authentic & real perspective.

I focus content on things people want to see and spend my own money on products that influencers have backed, and offer a more authentic review. I chose these categories because it still gives me the freedom to explore within them different kinds of content! I am proud that my online community can come to me, and get a truthful opinion before making buying decisions. I want to be the equivalent of an older sister online offering advice in all of these categories.

Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
I am obsessed with podcasts & audiobooks – I actually am launching my own podcast with a friend come May 31!

But these are my favorite audiobooks currently:
Rachel Hollis: Girl Go Wash Your Face
Rachel Hollis: Girl Stop Apologizing
Marie Kondo: The Art of Tidying Up (Which is now a Netflix series)!

Podcasts:
The Skinny Confidential TSC Him & Her Podcast: INFO PACKED, AMAZING GUESTS, & I ALWAYS LEARN SO MUCH!

Gals on the Go – These girls do what I do but on a larger scale. I love listening to them because it feels as if you’re a friend in the room!

Wall Street Journal What’s News – these are quick! If I am just looking for something quick to get info on – this is a great resource.

The Health Code: Australian YouTuber Sarah’s Day and her boyfriend Kurt do this podcast! I love it because they are people I already follow along with on other platforms. They’re well educated, and both bring a lot of value through their podcasts whether it be on tech, trends, health & fitness, or just day to day life.
