Meet Trailblazer Paige Wiese

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paige Wiese.

So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I had gone to school for architectural drafting and had been laid off twice by the time I was 22 due to the economy. I was diagnosed with epilepsy and was having frequent grand mal seizures so I was unable to drive to a new job. I started looking for ways that I could make money from home that wasn’t a scam. I had a knack for computers and enjoyed playing with graphics and fonts, and dabbled just a little bit in website design while growing up. On a whim, I decided to put an ad on Craigslist for website and graphic design services. As people started to contact me and I started getting more work and referrals I just kept posting everywhere I could on Craigslist to have maximum exposure because it was free marketing. I had the algorithm down. After about a year of that, I had grown my business to solely referral based and no longer needed to be posting ads. As the requests came in, I kept learning, finding out whatever I needed to know in order to help my clients achieve their goals.

I started hearing “I love the site, but it’s not generating any business.” I’d always ask what they were doing for marketing and the answer was always “nothing.” So, I began teaching myself Search Engine Optimization, paid advertising, social media, and anything else to help clients achieve the results they were looking for.

I had so many happy clients, but I wasn’t satisfied. I felt the websites could be better if we had better content, our turnarounds would be better if I had other creatives who could help, and I wanted to continue bringing fresh ideas to the table. That’s when I grew from a solo freelancer to a full-fledged business owner and entrepreneur. I was hiring the most talented people I could find to help with the areas that weren’t my expertise (like content writing), or areas that could benefit from dedicated attention like SEO or ad campaigns.

Seeing what I was capable of achieving with absolutely no money, finding what I was truly passionate about, and what was possible if I really put my mind to it has lead me to where I am today. As we celebrate our 10-year anniversary, I’ve gone from unemployed with epilepsy to CEO of a full-service digital marketing agency. I’ve managed to assemble an incredible team of a dozen talented individuals, and together we’ve helped hundreds of clients with their online presence and marketing needs – from start to finish.

Has it been a smooth road?
Absolutely not. One struggle was having to raise our rates in order to handle the increased overhead and reflect the higher quality service we were offering. In doing so, we completely lost our referral base because we were no longer “great communication, fantastic work, and cheap.” Our target audience went from start-up to established, growing businesses so we had to build our client base all over again. For a while, I stopped paying myself in order to pay my employees. I wondered if I should still be doing this or find a job with another company. But I believed in the work my team and I were doing, and that rejuvenated me. I recommitted to following my passion, and took the risk of investing in a business coach. I haven’t looked back and have more than quadrupled my business in three years.

You’re going to have days that knock you down. You’re going to have a client that knocks you down. You’re going to work long weeks. Keep looking forward, celebrate the little wins, have faith in yourself, and continue chasing that dream. At the end of the day, I love what I do and I’m so proud of the team we’ve built.

We’d love to hear more about Tree Ring Digital.
Tree Ring Digital is a top-ranked, Denver based, digital marketing agency offering an array of digital services ranging from WordPress website design and development and search engine optimization (SEO) to pay-per-click advertising, social media marketing, and reputation marketing. Our team assists businesses in increasing revenue and brand awareness by collaborating to develop and implement unique strategies specific to their business. We service a variety of industries, from restaurants and brick and mortar retailers to contractors and service providers.

We pride ourselves in not specializing in a specific industry or one specific service. Because we understand that each client is unique, we offer solutions that meet their needs and goals; we don’t do cookie-cutter solutions. For example, our website development goes beyond simple business sites to membership and online learning platforms, product builders for specialized products, and online ordering and subscription plans. For marketing, I don’t want to be selling paid ads to every single person we speak with, regardless of whether it’s a good fit or not. I love that we can find the best marketing solutions to meet each client’s needs and be confident in the results we’re able to offer.

What sets us apart is our understanding of both web and marketing. We don’t stop at “we got xxx amount of people to your site”. We work with our clients to understand the entire journey of the potential customer from start to finish and make the necessary adjustments whether it be on the marketing side or website side. We can quickly make changes because we listen to the client, we understand their goals, and we have access to all the data.

Which women have inspired you in your life?
My inspiration comes more from being told no by so many people. Being told I’d never make it, I’m not capable of doing it, or that I’m not smart enough has really been my inspiration!

The other inspiration comes from knowing that not only are there so few successful women-owned businesses (although that’s changing!), but there are even fewer successful lesbian-owned businesses. I wanted to prove the naysayers wrong. I wanted to show the world that a woman-owned, lesbian-owned business could not only be a great success, but could offer incredible services that help other businesses achieve the success they deserve.

Ultimately, visibility matters. It’s so important that people see that marginalized people – whether they’re minorities, members of the LGBT community, or people with epilepsy or other disorders – are capable of achieving great things and making a positive impact on the world.
