Meet Trailblazer Sydney Golden

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Golden.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sydney. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve been independent and very driven from a young age. I had my first job when I was 15 and worked throughout high school and college. Right after I graduated from college, I moved to Chicago to get my start in Event Marketing working for a large Marketing Firm downtown. It was a great experience, however, I realized agency life wasn’t for me. I moved onto professional sports where I spent most of my career.

However, while I knew I wanted to work in Marketing, my first position with a professional sports team was in their sales department. The advice I give to everyone starting or early on in their career is, it’s your next job, not your last job. Take the next job to put you into the best position for your future. So I got my foot in the door in ticket sales for the Pittsburgh Pirates. After three years in Pittsburgh, I moved to DC to become the Marketing Coordinator for the Washington Nationals. This was such an amazing opportunity. I was promoted within the organization and saw us build a team on and off the field from the ground up as the Nationals had only been in DC for 1 season prior. After over six years in MLB, I moved onto the NFL working for the NFL Players Association in DC. Here I got my first taste of Event Marketing on a national level and loved every minute of it. From the NFLPA, I made a move to a small Tennis Organization as the Director of Marketing. From there I landed in Denver and have been working professionally in Event Marketing for a media entity. However, now with over 16 years of experience under my belt, I know exactly what it takes to run a company from the ground up. My skills and experience have helped me see that I am capable of starting my own company, working for myself has always been my dream.

You’re Golden is starting up in Denver at the best possible time. Social media is still growing with no signs of slowing, more than ever people want to be able to put their phone down and be more present in the moment and finally so much content we consume is photo driven, You’re Golden (photo services) is going to be the answer. Launching soon in Denver as a test market, If everything goes as planned, becoming a You’re Golden Photographer will be as easy as becoming a rideshare driver.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Franklin D. Roosevelt said, “a smooth sea never made a skilled sailor” in my experience that couldn’t be truer. First off, if anyone says they’ve had it easy to get to where they are now, I’d be very skeptical that they have the life experience and learning to be a qualified leader. It’s those struggles that make you who you are and teach you the biggest lessons. Without struggle and failing, we never learn.

A big struggle for me was understanding how to navigate being a successful woman in a male-dominated industry. I realized I had to try harder, show up earlier, stay later, do more just to be on the same playing field (pun intended). Speaking my mind was something I had to be strategic about, going into my boss’s office emotional was not an option and I had to walk into a room full of men and know that I was meant to be there.

The advice I would give is what I mentioned previously, take the job, even if it’s not your dream job. It’s your next job, not your last job. Position yourself for your next move and what’s going to get you there rather than waiting for the perfect opportunity, those never actually come. You must step outside of your comfort zone to see progress.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about You’re Golden – what should we know?
I specialize in Marketing, events, activation, sponsorship and overall experiential opportunities that bring brands to life. If you think about it, when you’ve had a memorable moment with a brand was it because of an ad? Or was it because of experience? I’m going to guess you became a brand fanatic due to experience. My entire career has been to bring brands to life to make a real impact on the consumer. Which is also what  lead me to my new project, You’re Golden. Experiences are best captured through photos and videos. Social media is the best platform to then share those experiences. So, You’re Golden came together through magical circumstances; my experience and the current growth of social media. You’re Golden is a service provider, think TAKL but for photographers only. As a customer you fill out your order form, detailing the exact type of photo shoot you are looking for, customers pay by the hour for any type of photo shoot: influencer content, outdoor adventure, dating profile, business opening, parties, etc. Photos are delivered to the customer within 24 hours to use as they please. Not only does is You’re Golden easy and affordable, but it also allows customers to be more present and engaged in what they are doing, being able to put their phones down and just enjoy the moment because someone else has the pictures covered!

Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
While I’m launching a new career, I’m also trying to work on myself to be an overall more balanced person. I listen to Jay Shetty’s “On Purpose” and Oprah’s “Super Soul Conversations.” Both help me be a better person, leader, manager, friend and show up every day with meaning. While I do listen to business podcasts and read tons of books, etc. As I transition to a new phase in my career, I think it’s super important to make sure your mind and body are in balance with the amount of quantity and quality work I do as well.

I workout five days a week and meditate every morning for at least 20 mins. I write in a journal, at a minimum three things each day I’m grateful for. You can’t show up as a leader, owner, manager, etc at work without feeling good about yourself inside.
