Meet Winnie and Ryan DuBois and Kelissa Hieber of Goldspot Brewing Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Winnie and Ryan DuBois and Kelissa Hieber.

Goldspot Brewery was founded by brother-in-law team Matt Hughes and Alex Sward in February 2015. They laid the foundation for a community gathering place in the Berkeley neighborhood. In 2016, Kelissa Hieber joined the team as a beertender and quickly moved into an apprentice role, then Lead Brewer. In 2018, the time came for Matt and Alex to step away from the brewery to spend more time with their families and other pursuits. They sold the business to Ryan and Winnie DuBois and Kelissa Hieber, knowing the Goldspot family, and Berkeley neighborhood would be in good hands.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Taking over a business is never as easy as we hope it will be, but the transition of ownership has been relatively smooth, thanks to the fact that Kelissa remains the brewer at Goldspot. I believe that having the consistency of product has eliminated what would have been a rough transition. Securing licensing and navigating the legal side of a business is daunting, but thankfully we secured our liquor license right before the government shut down. We have been overwhelmed by the support and guidance we received from others in the industry which allowed the transition to be relatively smooth.

Goldspot Brewing Company – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are most proud of the community at Goldspot. When Ryan, Kelissa and I decided to take over Goldspot, we all felt very passionately about this opportunity to bring community to beer. We strive to create a sense of community, a place to be known, to gather, to celebrate and to feel at home. We hope our eclectic, balanced, and finely crafted beer will bring people together to share in this wild adventure of living, and living well. We even have a large community table in our taproom that is perfect for encouraging connections, conversations, and celebrations!

We are also proud to support our greater Denver community. We always have a rotating charity beer on tap. Currently, $1 off every pint of “Makin’ Rye Pale Ale” benefits Project Worthmore, an organization devoted to supporting refugees here in Colorado. In the past, we’ve also supported One Colorado, Girls Rock Denver, and Conservation Colorado. We feel very thankful to have an avenue to really impact our community through the success of Goldspot. We love it when people become regulars, tell others about us, host their celebrations and gatherings at Goldspot and when our customers become our friends.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I personally define success by the ability to serve others. When we are able to give back to our community and individuals in meaningful ways, that is when I know we will have been successful.
