Meet Zack Weinstein

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zack Weinstein.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a fun-loving and very energetic photographer based out of beautiful Boulder, Colorado. I get to do what I love everyday and I enjoy sharing my passion for the outdoors through my photography. I shoot weddings, corporate events, races, sports, portraits, newborn, maternity, pets as well as real estate.

In 2006, I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Still Based Media Design from Columbus College of Art and Design. I have studied and continued to study photography from its history to its current applications mainly focusing on capturing moments and people’s uniqueness through my images. I focus quite a bit on delivering a large volume of crisp, vibrant and exciting images that capture the essence of the day.

In my spare time, I can be found backpacking year round. I have been over 400 times and have solo backpacked like it’s no body’s business. I was taught to backpack by my mentor and friend Dave Enochs who passed away in 2015. I led numerous trips with him to Red River Gorge, KY, and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, MN. I still go to these very special places almost every year and I cherish both his memory and the endless skills and knowledge he passed on to me and the many other members of our charitable backpacking group called Explorer’s Post 1. I hope to someday lead my own troop so that I can be as meaningful to complete strangers as he was.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It is always a struggle for any photographer I’m sure. Simply keeping up to date on current equipment, techniques, marketing, sales and just plain looking this good isn’t easy at all. Last year I spent over $8k on marketing, $4k on equipment and $2k on clothing like three-piece suits, bowties and dress shoes. I like to look nice when I shoot especially during Corporate Events and Weddings. I am always trying to have a low cost to ensure a broad range of customers but at the same time, I must keep my pricing high enough to be sustainable.

Please tell us about Zack Weinstein Photography.
I cover lots of different types of photography which makes my job difficult but actually makes me a stronger photographer. When I photograph a wedding one day and then the next day I cover a corporate event, I apply techniques and standards from one to the other. Photographing Real-Estate one day sharpens my skills for when I pop off a several images of the wedding venue I am at the next week. My favorite thing to photograph is a wedding. I get very involved in the day and I like to ensure that the bride and groom are happy and can rest assured knowing that I am giving them 100% all day. I am known for going the extra mile to follow my creative vision. I lay down on my back in a three-piece suit to get a wide-angle fish-eye of the entire wedding party toasting over me or lie down in the middle of the road between traffic to get a great shot of an engaged couple with their favorite building in the background. I dance, sing, whistle and clang a cowbell to get an unhappy child to smile for the camera. I deliver images that look realistic and I don’t apply cheesy pre-purchased filters to my work. I deliver my images unwatermarked because I don’t believe my images should be advertising billboards.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would certainly take out a loan right off the bat for $20,000. I had a slow start because I didn’t have the necessary two pro DSLR cameras, two on-camera flashes, and studio set-up that it takes to compete with the numerous serious professional photographers. Now that I have a really up-to-date and high-end gear list I am more confident when shooting and am able to secure more serious professional work.

Pricing:

  • My starting wedding package is only $1,100!
  • My portrait sessions all start around $200!
  • My real-estate photography ranges from $180-$400.
