Today we’d like to introduce you to Zarah Anliot.
Zarah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My dreadlocks gave me superpowers, and this is how I found a way to pay it forward.
Growing up, I was always the one who got to style my family’s hair. I did fun up-dos and simple haircuts. I dyed my own hair in any color you can imagine, and I went from long hair to shaved sides and undercuts. The interest for expressing creativity with hair has always been there but I never thought of it as a profession.
Three years ago I got curious about dreadlocks, I didn’t even know they were called dreadlocks back then, I started doing research and soon found this amazing loctician Seienstyle. The dreadlocks she created were long, smooth, and just glowingly beautiful. I knew I wanted her to do my dreadlocks, only to find out she lived in Sweden. Sweden, where I’m originally from, had just visited at that point, with no plans to go back anytime soon.
Determined I wanted dreadlocks by Seienstyle I’d rather wait. As I looked for other options in the meantime, I came across the perfect synthetic dreadlock set online. The dreadlock artist called this set the Forrest set and I was immediately drawn to the brown and green colors, the texture and the look. After hours and hours of cramping arms and frustrating attempts to get somewhat neat sections through the mirror, I was done, I had dreadlocks.
The power that rose through my spirit, body and mind was nothing less than super powerful! It felt like I belonged in this energy that the dreadlocks generated. I felt at home in my hair, in myself, and in the look I now projected to anyone who saw me. I felt free, wild, and strong. And it shows on any picture taken of me with dreadlocks.
As time progressed, I wore my temporary synthetic dreadlocks off and on. I worked a corporate job and felt trapped in the routine. In search of my existential purpose, I looked back to what interested me as a child. Creativity was the apparent denominator, but I didn’t have a niche, nothing I felt passionate about. Connecting the dots of what gave me superpowers and my determination to get Seienstyle dreadlocks. I jumped on the offer to learn a completely new profession and become a Professional Seienstyle Loctician.
The comprehensive Seienstyle education package provided me with the tools of trade I needed to run a dreadlock business. Paired with my background as a Business Analyst I finally got the opportunity to build myself a purpose, a business, and an art-form in dreadlocks. Dread Vibez was born!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Learning a new profession, especially a hand-craft profession, requires a lot of practice! I didn’t want to dread real people’s hair until I felt confident in the technique and the process, so I spent a lot of time and money into the practice. The challenge for me wasn’t the craft itself, but the trust in that I am doing the right thing. My heart and spirit could not be more clear that I have found my passion, but there’s that little voice saying “get a corporate job with benefits”. Running my own business forces me to have trust and confidence in my own abilities.
It is my accepted challenge to spread knowledge about the beauty of dreadlocks so that we can break the stigmas and preconceptions surrounding them. Dreadlocks are not dirty or exclusively for certain people. Dreadlocks are squeaky clean and everyone can have them, no matter hair type or lifestyle.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Dread Vibez story. Tell us more about your work.
Dread Vibez is everything dreadlocks!
We provide the full dreadhead experience; from the initial consultation of creating new dreadlocks, to the regular root maintenance’s, and everything in between. Everyone’s dreadlocks are unique. It’s important to know how to care for them as they mature and grow, dreadlocks are not a one-time-quick-fix. Dread Vibez takes pride in caring for our clients and supporting their full dreadlock journey.
We honor all dreadlocks by using a crocheting technique that won’t damage your natural hair (no use of twists, rips, wax, or gels). It is actually possible to brush them out because your hair won’t be destroyed with this method. Dreadlocks of any length and color can be accomplished by adding extension hair. Four inches of hair is the only prerequisite to get started.
For those not wanting the long-term commitment, Dread Vibez also offer Synthetic Dreadlock services. We install temporary dreadlocks and help you re-attach or take them out. Adding a few colorful dreadlocks to your brushable hair is a fun way to enjoy creative expression. We do custom dreads as well as pre-made accent sets.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck when it comes to life or business. It’s all about timing, investment, and making the right choices about timing and investment. Not only a financial investment, but also commitment, perseverance, and effort. Hard work pays off might seem like a cliche, but working hard is being able to see opportunities outside our goal-oriented tunnel vision. Knowing how to strategically progress towards something bigger and absolute.
