Today we’d like to introduce you to Business Cashmere.
Hi Business Cashmere, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Through pandemic, heartbreak, and joy, Business Cashmere has persevered to be where we are now. Music has been a long journey for each of us, but we’ve always known individually and collectively that this is what we want to do with our lives. During the worst years of the pandemic, we grew a close bond musically and as business partners.
None of us were really playing in a band, but we all lived together in a little bubble, and once we had all officially lost our jobs, it was the only thing we had left to turn to. As restrictions lifted, we started playing shows together. Our first show ever was in masks, but we still played and sang our hearts out because this is quite simply what we love to do.
Once we started playing concerts, we saw an opportunity to impact our community with our music and art. During the height of the Black Lives Matter movement, we were able to raise hundreds of dollars as a band for the ACLU Colorado Chapter in an effort to bring legal relief to those who need it most.
At the core of the band, there is a support system for our collective struggles in life. Serious injuries, racism, and family issues have hampered each of us differently, but the partnership that has grown from Business Cashmere has always been there for us.
The latest songs that we have been writing and will shortly be releasing reflect the impact of those joys and frustrations, from the lowest lows to the highest highs. Our effort, first and foremost, is to try to connect with people who feel that they may be lacking connection and give them an opportunity to relate to someone they may not even know.
We believe emotions are universal, and art and music provide a unique opportunity for us to reach out a helping hand to anyone who might be struggling and even the people who are experiencing the best times of their lives. That’s what keeps us going – seeking that connection, and seeking that relief.
In the future, we will be releasing a lot more music, and working on a clothing line for which the proceeds will go back into our community.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Making it as a musician is notoriously difficult, and each of us has faced different challenges along the way. The group has and always will be there for us, so Business Cashmere has definitely made it easier. A lot of these struggles have been lifelong, whereas some of them are more recent.
Chris is our lead singer and main songwriter. Losing his parents at a young age, and going through the foster system is something that is reflected in a lot of our art. It is a relationship that a lot of people have had and it’s really important to us that those people can find someone to relate to. Even if you’ve never had the experience of losing someone close to you, it’s meant to make you feel grateful for everything you have, so that you can enjoy it even more.
George, our guitarist and second main songwriter’s dad had a life-changing stroke in 2021. It was especially hard because of the conditions of the pandemic. Limited visitation at hospitals, stress about the virus, and the fear of losing someone he loves are also reflected in our art.
Some of the obstacles have been misfortune unexpectedly turning into a positive. When our first drummer left the band, we were devastated and felt like there was never going to be anybody who could fill those shoes. After some time, Tallon, George, and Chris started writing again and came up with an entirely new album inspired by our life events and some of the best times that we shared with him.
Soon after that, we met the phenomenal drummer and multi-instrumentalist Ben Eberle and pulled in our long-time friend, keyboard player, and multi-instrumentalist, Matt Paradis. These new members were more than just fresh faces – they have become integral to our sound and the structure of our group. Without the adversity that we faced, we never would have gotten to this point.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Our music is definitely the thing that we are most proud of, but we pride ourselves on our visual art as well. For each of the songs that we have released, we have put out high-quality music videos that we have worked on collectively as a group from filming to editing. Whether it’s passing the camera from hand to hand, or pitching ideas for the next scene, we all work together to put forth a high-quality video experience with our music.
Our best-known song is called “Social Distance,” and was written during the worst times of the pandemic. We recorded it in masks. A lot of people heard the title and were expecting something glum, but we took an entirely different approach and produced a vibrant, twangy, and bouncy single that took the idea of social distance and turned it on its head.
Where others saw an experience of isolation, we saw an opportunity to grow as an individual. That’s what has driven a lot of our songwriting – taking expectations and subverting them to offer a new perspective.
What does success mean to you?
Success for us is just being able to help others appreciate life to the fullest. Our music is all about connecting with people and giving a voice to stories that aren’t always heard otherwise. That comes out in different ways. Our song, “Survive,” is about just trying to get by day to day, which is something a lot of people struggle with. Our song, “Endless Summer,” focuses on a beautiful moment that feels like it is never going to end.
In every case, we’re trying to bring people together, either at a concert, in their headphones, or just to have something to talk about. We really care about people and if we make the world even just a little bit better of a place for anyone, we’d define that as success.
