Rising Stars: Meet Laura Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Smith.

Hi Laura, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I transformed my lifelong love of photography into a business after the birth of my oldest daughter in 2010. As a new parent, I desperately wanted to pause time and remember everything. Photography evolved into my way of doing that, and now I do the same for others because I believe so wholeheartedly in the significance of photos. I know first-hand that every single stage matters and they disappear way too fast.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My biggest struggle has been creating a healthy work/home balance. My husband and 4 kids will always be my top priority, but I take my work seriously, so finding a balance between being present at home and advancing my business has been hard. This is my 12th year in business, and I improve a bit each year, so I’m moving in the right direction.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a portrait photographer based in Kiowa, Colorado. I photograph families, high school seniors, couples, and newborns throughout the Denver Metro and surrounding areas. My goal is to create gorgeous, heirloom-quality photos for my clients while providing a relaxed and fun experience from start to finish.

Artistically, I love photos that are bold, vibrant, warm, and backlit, but even more importantly, I want them to include real smiles, laughter, connection, and emotion. Photos shouldn’t be cheesy or awkward, and they don’t need to be uncomfortable. I have set myself apart by making my client experience as easy, fun, and stress-free as possible. Taking the time to make my clients feel confident and relaxed has made a world of difference, and I love nothing more than documenting the beauty of each client through beautiful photos.

What does success mean to you?
When I started Laura Smith Photography, I thought that my success would be determined by my income, but the older I get, the more I realize that this isn’t true. At the end of the day, I want to know that I have taken care of my family and clients well, and if I have, then I consider myself a success.
