Rising Stars: Meet Lexi Schoonover

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lexi Schoonover.

Lexi, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I spent my early 20s with no real concept of what I wanted to do with my life- nothing really lit a fire in me until I broke my hip at 22. Through that experience, I grew to see how impactful exercise and nutrition were to a person’s health and thus their ability to live a life doing things they enjoyed. This was finally my fire. I went to school for exercise science and nutrition and attained my strength and conditioning specialist certification in 2017. I at the time knew I wanted to work closely with the rehabilitation side of exercise but really just needed to get my foot in the door. I spent about a week working for 24-hour fitness but knew that I wouldn’t continue to learn in a position like that so I went back to the job hunt. It wasn’t long before I stumbled upon an exercise specialist listing for a physical therapy clinic and I knew this could be really great.

Fast forward two years and I had been working at the clinic in only a rehabilitation role but I now had a vision for strength and conditioning following rehab. So, back in October 2018, I started a partnership with the clinic as an independent contractor working on the side as a strength and conditioning specialist. In April of 2019, I had enough clients to step away from my exercise specialist role and focus just on training.

Fast forward to early 2020 and I was finally completely sustaining myself through my training session, and then covid hit. I knew I had to adapt in order to do my job so I took everything virtual. Took all of my clients through Google Meet, set up a workspace, and just tried to get the hang of this new way of doing my job. It was during this time that I decided it was finally time to go back to school for my Master’s degree so that I could make the most of my role as a coach and exercise teacher.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In no way has this been easy! From my own rehab journey not knowing if I was going to end up with a hip replacement and real loss of function to working 60+ hours a week to get my business up and running, covid, graduate school- there have been so many things that have made me question the path I am on.

This journey has made me work, made me cry, filled me with joy and gratitude, and continues on a daily basis to both challenge and fulfill my life.

Recently covid really threw a wrench in the growth of my business and made me adapt to training clients in a way I never thought I would. However, this change has also given me the freedom to pursue higher education and see how adaptable I can truly be.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I work with people of all abilities to teach them how to care for their bodies as a means of being able to do the things they love to do. I would say my biggest difference from most other trainers is my knowledge of corrective exercise and strength and conditioning which allows me to address any client’s needs. I am always most proud when a client of mine says to me “I can do blank without pain and better than I ever could before working with you.” When my knowledge and passion meet their drive and determination to take control of their health wonderful things happen!

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Be willing to work crazy hours for just the experience. Seek out those in your field that share your passion and are where you would like to be someday and learn from them. Ask all the questions, make mistakes, fearlessly love your goals.
