Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessy Nicholson.
Hi Jessy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started in the pole fitness industry 15 years ago and yoga ten years ago. Both practices have been so influential in my life that it became a dream of mine to open a fusion studio that offered both. I had initially been attracted to pole and yoga for the physicality of it, but I quickly fell in love with the emotional, mindfulness, and community they both offered. I live with PTSD from serious sexual and domestic violence and trauma. Yoga offered me a way to find peace with that. Pole taught me how to regain the sense of control of my own body. Both provided a community of amazing, kind-hearted humans.
I worked in agriculture for the past decade as an agronomist (soil & crop scientist), saved my money, and was finally ready to open a studio when the pandemic happened. Originally, I was planning on moving to Florida to open something small by the beach, but several events changed those plans. I was planning to put the house on the market the week that we were given stay-at-home orders, so that was at least postponed. Then I watched as the yoga community took a huge hit last summer when the two most well-known, privately owned yoga studios had to close their doors. I love my community here and felt called to rethink my plans and open something in the Denver area that was big enough to hold those large 60 person classes again (when we can).
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Covid has been the biggest obstacle for sure. We opened in November 2020 when we could only have 10% capacity in a gym, which was a huge financial detriment to add on top of opening a brand new business. We took the extra mile to add UV lights throughout the HVAC system and get top-of-the-line air filters to make sure that everyone felt and was safe when they were in the building. I don’t think that what we’ve experienced is unique to us, all of Denver, all of Colorado, the entire world, is struggling with how to live and operate through these times. We’ll continue to navigate it as a human community as we rebuild and grow.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in pole fitness, yoga, and trauma-informed coaching. I’ve been in the industry for over a decade and have seen it evolve in so many ways. I’m most proud of the community that has been cultivated at The Sankalpa Collective. Everyone that has walked through the door has the most welcoming hearts and positive attitudes. It really is a place where you can take a breath and be yourself.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Acceptance. Accepting people as they are and where they are at. Accepting myself under the same terms. Accepting that there are things in life and in business that I don’t have control over, but also accepting responsibility and taking action on the things I do. Accepting that it isn’t always easy, but the laughter & joy, tears & late nights are all worth it.
