Hidden Gems: Meet Wendy Billings of Healthy Environs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Billings.

Wendy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have been in the cleaning industry for over 20 years. In 2016, I had a stroke, and it changed my career path. At the time, I was cleaning rugs and textiles, and we had started to try out a fairly new (at least to our industry) product called chlorine dioxide. Chlorine Dioxide has been around for over 100 years, but it has been used mainly in industrial settings and water treatment facilities. Using it in a residential setting has only been around for dozen years or so.

After speaking with one of my mentors, a leader in the industry, I decided to start my own odor removal business. Healthy Environs LLC was born. We provide odor and allergen removal throughout much of the front range. While I specialize in smoke odors, I also treat for cooking odors- think curry, skunk odors, musty basement odors, even mystery odors. While the product is great for pet odors, I only treat pet odors in the Longmont area. It is also fantastic for removing allergens from home.

Along the way, I got my mold mitigation and inspection license and have teamed up with someone with 27 years in the industry to provide mold services as well. Throughout my entire career, myself, along with a few others in the industry, have been working with the manufacturer to continue to add new products to our line. After providing amazing results for the toughest projects like the 50-year nicotine removal job we did, I realized that while that is awesome, most people do not need that level of odor help. However, almost all of us struggle with the smaller annoying odors- trash, diaper pails, pet beds, litter boxes, teenage boy rooms, etc. So this year, I am launching an online store that carries a line of products specially designed for homeowners. Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Every business has its ups and downs and learning curves. I started with the name All Odors Gone Longmont. I thought it was perfect. People didn’t like being associated with odors. Having Longmont in the name made people think I only serviced that area. Rebranding was a great decision, but a costly one both in time and money.

When you do odor and mold removal, you have to understand how things in the homework, like HVAC systems or attic fans. I didn’t. I had to learn those in addition to my actual job. When you start out a business on a shoestring budget, it is scary with a capital S! It takes time for a business to build a reputation and become profitable. Just when you think you are crushing it, something like Covid comes along and changes everything. You have to keep adapting. Most of my customers are from cities almost an hour away from me. Yep keep adapting and listening to books on tape.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are an odor and allergen removal company. We can get rid of almost any odor in 24 hours guaranteed or you don’t pay. (Pet Odor are different.
