Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Terry.
Hi Amy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in Littleton, CO, where I still reside and work. I began my career at 16 answering phones at the local Remax office, it was a perfect after-school job working with some of my best friends. At that time, I had zero interest in actually going into Real Estate as a career. At 18, I headed to Boulder to attend the University of Colorado, Pre Law. During my undergrad, I worked at Remax Alliance as a broker’s assistant, still with no interest in pursuing real estate. My boss at that time became a huge mentor in my life and when I started doubting my decision to start law school, he encouraged me to get my Real Estate License and just “try it out”. I did a year deferment on my law school acceptance, got my real estate license at 22, and it’s been a whirlwind ever since!
I initially went back to the Remax office I worked at in high school and my first boss became my first Managing Broker. I stayed there for five years, learning a ton along the way. Then in 2010, a huge opportunity presented itself when my college mentor decided to start his own brokerage, 8z Real Estate, and asked me to be a part of it. I left Remax to become a founding member of 8z Real Estate. Since then, I’ve become a top producing Realtor, a team leader, a managing broker, and now partner at 8z Real Estate.
As a partner and managing broker for 8z, I wear a lot of hats, but I am most passionate about helping my clients and team members achieve their goals. In the midst of doing that, I’ve also been blessed enough to invest in the long-term and short-term rentals, teach seminars on homeownership and to invest in real estate, and be the developer on a few residential new builds. Most recently, I partnered with my talented stager to start a Home Decor & Furniture rental business called Stage Right Rentals.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s funny that looking back on it today, it seems there was no other path for me than to end up in the real estate field but there were several years I struggled with if this is what I really wanted to do with my life. Real estate is an eat what you kill business, I learned very quickly you get what you put into it. That’s the great news and bad news about it. There’s no cruising in this business, especially starting out. If you want to stay relevant and on top of your game, you have to be constantly learning, pivoting, and hustling. That was a struggle starting at 22. One getting clients to trust me but also being self-motivated and disciplined enough to start my own business. To choose to work on the weekends rather than going out with friends or going out but still getting up and making it happen. Every day I had to make the right choices to succeed.
There have been so many hurdles over the years, too many to list, but that’s what I thrive on. I love to problem solve and learn and grow. This business is forever changing and every deal is different, so it keeps you on your toes for sure. Every year presents a new market and different market challenges. In 2008 listings were sitting for months on end, short sales & foreclosures were abundant vs today, we’re desperate for inventory across all price ranges. To stay successful year after year, you must learn to navigate and best represent your clients in all environments.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At the time of founding 8z Real Estate, our mission was to raise the level of professionalism in our industry. We’ve worked extremely hard the last 12 years to always put clients first, only employ full-time professionals, and educate the public that we are not all interchangeable in the real estate industry.
I see firsthand, on a regular basis, how a bad real estate agent can cost their clients a lot of money, time, heartache, stress, and liability. Who you work with matters and we strive to provide above and beyond service to our clients. We want clients for life who trust that we always have their best interest at the core of every move we make and that we will always be ahead of the curve when it comes to knowledge, skills, and technology.
We also believe in a healthy & positive work environment. We cultivate a culture of abundance providing our agents with everything they need to be successful and there is a sense of harmony and support among our agents. We truly all celebrate each other’s achievements and spread the wealth of knowledge, resources, and experience among everyone. It is a unique brokerage that I am very proud to be a part of.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Do not take everything so personally and set some boundaries. In the beginning, I took on all the emotions of my clients and took every little thing to heart. The reality is buying and selling real estate is a huge endeavor. It’s emotional and can be stressful at times. Clients and agents, on the other side sometimes can have outbursts, good and bad. I’ve learned to acknowledge how my clients are feeling and understand things like a deal falling through or not getting their dream home is huge deal to the client. But I do not have to ruin my day or take on feeling the same way they do. Express you understand how their feeling, mitigate as much as you can and then keep moving. Once I let all that weight and emotion go, I was much happier and productive.
