Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Magee.
Hi Stephanie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My husband and I have always wanted to own our own business. In January 2020, we started looking in to different franchise options and we set on finding something within the fitness realm because of our passion for health and wellness. Lucky for us there was already a Spenga location open in Broomfield so I went in to try the workout, knowing that I wasn’t going to be able to promote something I did not personally love. And what do you know… I feel in love. It was the workout I had been missing in my life and a workout that I felt that was anyone and everyone.
So on March 3rd, we flew to Chicago to meet the corporate team and learn more about the inner and outer workings of the business. One week later we signed on to become franchise owners for 3 locations in Denver and 3 days later the pandemic shut down the world. We watched as our industry, like so many others, was completely devastated. And we were terrified of what it all meant for our future locations.
With enough faith and hope, we made the hard to decision to look for leasing space, and in September we found one the perfect location next to King Soopers off of 38th and Sheridan. At that time gyms were still at least than 50% capacity with 100% mask mandates, and our sister gyms around the nation were barely hanging on. But we decided to push through and prayed that that if we just kept taking the next step, hoping when we got to our opening things would be opened up.
We started officially building our community early June and to date we have 150+ Founding Members who are excited about what we are bringing to this area. Currently we are scheduled to open this Fall and although there are sure to be some bumps in the round, we are hopeful that we will open strong…. Spenga Strong 💚
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No. In addition, to the various ups and downs of COVID affecting the fitness industry. We’ve also run in to major delays in our permitting process. We were scheduled to have our permits after 8 weeks of waiting, early June. But for whatever reason, we were delayed an additional 8 weeks and just got them late last month. This put us two addition months delayed in opening, which has been very costly.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Spenga is the ultimate workout experience because it puts equal emphasis on Cardio, Strength and Flexibility. Each 60 minute session is 20 minutes of Spin, 20 minutes of Strength and 20 minutes of Yoga. We pride ourselves on delivering a workout that maximizes your results without breaking down your body. Additionally, ever session is taught by top notch instructors in a luxury designed studio.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The industry has already begun to shift. Currently people are looking for membership options that provide more than just one type of exercise. Most people don’t want to spend 5 to 6 days at the working out but they also know that they need to get in cardio, strength training and stretching. Thus, we are beginning to see many studios offer many different exercise types. Additionally, I hear many people walking away from their “favorite” gyms because they just can’t take the “wear on their body”. With such, fitness is going to need to be better at protecting the member. I see this happening primary with how the fitness professionals operates. As a whole I believe that fitness professionals need to get more educated on how the body moves, what it truly needs, proper form and most importantly how they themselves can be educators for their members. People are getting smarter about what they are looking for, they no longer want just a “coach” that shouts out orders, but rather people are looking for fitness professionals that help them so that they can have a body that feels good long term, and they want it in a class setting.
