Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Nemechek.
Hi Emma, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Like most of the workers in my industry, I was furloughed (as a pastry chef) when Covid-19 came during the first quarter of 2020. I continued posting photos of pastries I would make at home and slowly started to get orders from friends and former co-workers.
I turned it into a small business towards the last quarter of 2020 and named it Sweetened Patisserie, an online bakery shop located in Arvada, CO. I specialize in custom cakes and logo cookies aside from doing collabs with other small businesses in the Denver area.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Every day for me is an opportunity to learn. When I started my business, I was making and offering so many items and it made tracking my inventory a nightmare for one. I wanted to offer a lot of pastry items because it was fun to exercise creativity in the production of my work. In this case, pastries.
However, this method was not efficient for a one-woman show, so to speak. I have learned over time to streamline my operation by focusing on what I envision my brand to be. I have to police myself when I get sidetracked and remind myself that if I need this business to thrive, it has to be sustainable.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Sweetened Patisserie is an online bakery shop that specializes in custom celebration cakes, wedding cakes, and logo cookies. I get booked mostly thru word of mouth advertising. That makes me proud as a business owner.
At this time, I can be reached through private messaging on Instagram or Facebook for orders or collaborations while my website is under construction. It will be launched soon so stay tuned!
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I have learned along my journey is that to never give up. Yes, I admit I wanted to throw in the towel on more than one occasion. Why? Because I didn’t know what I was doing, or more to the point, I was doing so many things.
Remember when I said, I was offering too many items? I would also be so discouraged when some of the items I would post to sell online would receive zero traffic after spending hours on shooting, editing, or making 30 seconds videos then re-editing, etc. I have to remind myself that I am a pastry chef first thing. That means I need to focus on what I do best, making pastries.
