Daily Inspiration: Meet Jordan Yewey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Yewey.

Hi Jordan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Ever since I can remember I have been singing and writing music. My dad bought me my first guitar when I was only 4 and anytime, I found myself near a piano or musical instrument growing up I just had to sit and play. I found myself making up melodies and lyrics and I would do this for hours. I would even sneak into the formal living room of my house where my dad kept my great grandpa’s old electric guitar, and I would sit and strum it and feel like a rock star, even though I had no idea what I was doing. However, it wasn’t until age 8 I sat down and put my first lyrics on paper and age 12 when I would formally learn to play guitar and teach myself to play piano shortly thereafter. It’s crazy to believe that was 20 years ago.

I spent the better part of my teenage years crafting angsty music, performing for my friends, and in a few talent shows. I then went off to college and 4 years later found myself working in sales and would grow into management with time, and only a few of my closest confidants would even know that I was a singer-songwriter. But even though my life had seemingly gone in another direction, I still dedicated every second I could to songwriting. I can’t even count the amount of songs I wrote driving to and from work or the amount of times I snuck into the bathroom or the office at work to record a melody or lyrics that would pop into my head. I would go home and cry to my mom that all I wanted to do is be a singer-songwriter, but I had no idea how to make my dreams a reality. I was lost and barely getting by. I still remember my mom lending me money one day and I told her I couldn’t take it as I knew she really needed it at the time, and she looked me dead in the eyes and said “It’s fine, you can pay me back one day when you’re rich and famous.”

I guess the real turning point came in 2018. I would drive by this graveyard every day on the way to work and all I could think was, “If I died tomorrow, no one would know who I really am. No one would know any of my songs. No one would know I spent hours, months, and truly the better part of 2 decades perfecting them. No one would know I can sing and play guitar, and it is the one thing that makes me happiest in this world.” What sad and morbid thoughts, right? But I guess they were ones I needed to have to remind me who I was and what I was supposed to be doing with my life. I then proceeded to buy myself a purple acoustic-electric guitar with the little money I had saved so I could start performing, which seems insane at the time because it’s not like I had any gigs to perform at, but it was a start. Over the last few years, I began performing more and more, and even though I am a long way from where I want to be, I am happier and now I’ll be damned if people don’t know that my music and my voice is who I am.

I once read that you have this innate sense of what you are supposed to do and who you are supposed to be when you are young, but often it gets lost as we are subjected to the real world and the harsh realities that come with it. I guess that’s why I am where I am now. I recently called my dad up and asked him why he took me to buy that guitar when I was 4, and he simply replied, “Because you asked me to.” So that’s really it. I just know that I am supposed to be a singer-songwriter, that’s why I’m here and that’s who I am.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has most definitely not been a smooth road. As I mentioned previously, I definitely got off track for a while. And believe it or not “Singer/Songwriter” is not the most traditional of job titles so I have seen my fair share of naysayers and haters. For example, I remember expressing how unhappy I was at work to my boss and telling her all I wanted to do is be a songwriter to which she replied, “Can you pay your bills doing that?”

Fortunately, though, my family and closest friends have always been extremely supportive. Even when my dreams seemed so far out of reach my parents were always there to get my out my head and set me back on track. I will forever be grateful for those who could help see me through my darker times and help push me towards my dreams.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a singer-songwriter, so I perform and also write my own original music.

Performance-wise I think I am definitely most known for my boisterous vocals, intense guitar strumming, and my elusive 80’s covers (Lord knows I will never get sick of singing “Living on a Prayer”). As I perform more and more people do start to learn my originals as well, which has been extremely fun and exciting. I am really hoping to put some of my original music out here soon so I can grow my audience and fan base and just continue to further my music career beyond Colorado.

Although I adore performing and I am very proud of the work I put into each of my sets in full, I think the thing I am most proud of is my songwriting. Looking back throughout the decades and my years of songwriting I feel I have come to a place where I am able to craft really good and honest music, that hopefully touches people and can mean as much to them as it means to me when I am writing it. I try to write from the heart and although it is a release for me, I also want my songs to be something people can feel and relate to.

What matters most to you? Why?
Living life with purpose. I think that can trickle into lots of different things. Loving family and friends, forgiving, doing what you are passionate about, and pouring meaning into everything you do. You only get one life and there are no do-overs so I think living with purpose is important.
