Community Highlights: Meet Laura Fooks of Light Speaks Loudest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Fooks. 

Hi Laura, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
When I was a teen girl about a decade ago, I really struggled because it felt like all the teen resources I had were either too shallow or too cheesy. I was looking for something to meet me authentically in my strengths and my struggles and couldn’t seem to find it. Ten years later, solid teen resources are still tough to find, so that’s why my husband and I started Light Speaks Loudest last year. Now, we create quarterly subscription boxes serving teen girls across the country.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been quite an adventure! My husband has a full-time job, so a majority of the business responsibilities fall to me. Despite having my MBA, it’s been a huge (but exciting!) learning curve when it comes to everything entrepreneurship. Currently, I work out of my home office, and my day-to-day activities include everything from connecting with vendors to taking product photos to packing our subscription boxes to crafting Instagram and TikTok content and more.

When it comes to specific struggles, I call myself a “recovering perfectionist” because I’m continually fighting against wanting to control things and have them go exactly my way, while also recognizing that perfection is a myth. Over my time running Light Speaks Loudest, I’ve been recognizing how the process of giving myself grace is actually a better and healthier route for me to take as a person, which affects how I show up for the work I do.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
To be real, it’s a tough time to be a teen girl right now and it’s my dream come true to be able to support them. At Light Speaks Loudest, we’re known for encouraging 13-17 year-old girls and creating experiences through our subscription boxes that help them better love themselves, others, and God. There are tons of subscription boxes designed for women, but ours is the first and only seasonal box designed to serve a teen girl audience interested in living out their faith. One really fun and unique thing about Light Speaks Loudest is that we include at least one product from a teen-owned business in every box!

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
One of my favorite childhood memories was when I was a preschooler and got to attend the birthday party of a kindergartener alongside my older sister. When the kids started making fun of me because I was the youngest, my sister refused to play along with their games and told them to stop. They did, and we eventually continued enjoying the party together. My sister has been a fierce advocate for me my whole life and that experience inspires me to be an advocate for others to this day!
