Today we’d like to introduce you to Livvy List.
Hi Livvy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi there!
My name is Livvy List and I am a 25-year-old self-taught photographer based in Denver, Colorado. I began my career ~10 years ago when I picked up my first camera for fun. My passion grew and slowly turned from just a hobby of taking photos of my friends, to a career and something I hope to do forever.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The art of photography has always come extremely naturally to me, however, it’s never a smooth road! I can remember countless times where I have felt defeated. I’ve had times where I’ve felt like I’m not good enough and where I’ve questioned my ability in what I do. I still even struggle with those doubts at times.
I think one of my biggest struggles on my journey has been being told no. “No, you didn’t get the job,” or “no you aren’t the right fit” -these are really difficult things to hear. It’s hard not to get down on yourself in those moments, but over time they have been some of my greatest blessings because they have led me to places, I had only ever dreamed of. I think of those times as some of the most crucial moments during my career because they are a true test to my commitment to this job.
What I have learned in the “no moments” evolve into paths for growth. It’s so important to remain persistent and to work even harder to go out and find those “yes moments.” Whether or not my career goes as planned, I’m always along for the ride.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in fashion, portraiture, product, lifestyle, & travel photography. I try not to limit myself when it comes to the art of photography– I feel as though my profession developed immensely when I opened my eyes to the world of product photography.
I think my personal photography style can be recognized by playful color & capturing rare, authentic moments. I hope, to an outside eye, that my art can tell a story and that each individual can gather something different in each photograph.
My photography has also been greatly shaped by my love for travel. Experiencing different cultures and translating the life, color, and energy of the environment is a true passion of mine and something I hope grows within my portfolio.
I believe that a true photographer has the ability to connect with whoever or whatever they are photographing. Making the subject comfortable is the key. I hope, if nothing else, my work reflects just that.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is to just do. If you don’t know what you’re doing, (which we can all relate to)… just start somewhere. It doesn’t matter where.
The more you take small steps to pursue the career you want, the more you attract just that. The universe works in crazy ways, but the good doesn’t come by just sitting on your couch wishing you had your dream career.
I had someone once tell me, “If not you, then who?” This has stuck with me as I’ve navigated my career– and I hope these words motivate you a little too. 🙂
